Picked this one up yesterday a Savage Anschutz 164 Sporter with 4.5-14X40 AO Vari-X III for $650 at a local pawnshop I frequent. Going back to basics here and going to spend a lot of my off time at an indoor range in Lubbock while I'm down there working. I can't seem to find a decent outdoor range within 1.5 hours so thought I'd just pick up a good little .22 and go to work honing my other than bench skills.

I went and shot it this morning it was pretty close to dead on at 100 yards with CCI Blazer ammo. Managed to hit little 2.5" flippers about 75% of the time in a stiff wind. I think the scope is a little much might look for a VX2 EFR 3-9 Rimfire scope and put that 4.5-14 on one of my varmint rifles.

Congrats! You stole that rifle; the scope alone would bring around $350 used at auction. I have an earlier version, the Savage/Anschutz 141 that was my first firearm (1966). It still puts 10 CCI SVs into 3/4 to 7/8 inch at 50 yds. BTW, I think you would find the SV more accurate overall, and definitely so at 100 yds. My 1712 puts 10 SVs into 1 inch out at 100, Blazer and minimags about double group size.

Use of .22 rfs for practice makes so much sense that I do not let the kids in our youth group shoot their deer rifles at paper. My son, now 16, has fired a .300 WBY exactly twice. Each round has taken a "biggest bucks in Maine" (> 200# dressed) deer. We practice with .22s and .223/ARs.

Congrats! That is a beautiful looking rifle, and looks like you got a great deal with that scope.

Taylorforce 1--The 3x-9x with EFR that you mentioned is a great scope. I have one on an air rifle and it will focus down to about 30 feet.

They are great guns! I bought my Savage Anschutz 184 (same basic rifle) new in the mid 70's for 99 bucks, and it's still accurate and working perfectly!

Good for you. A very, very wise decision, one which was economically sound but, more importantly, food for your soul. What could be better than a gorgeous rifle at below bargain basement prices?

Having said that, your post opened an old wound. I had a chance to purchase two (matching) Model 88 Wins, one in .243 the other one in .308, both with 2.5X Weaver scopes and both in great condition, for a total of $1100.

Sob . . . I chose poorly and passed. Sob . . . I am still considering committing hara-kiri. Sob . . .

I sincerely hope you enjoy your new acquisition and commend you on your wise decision.

Sorry I haven't got back to this thread in awhile, and thanks for the great comments on this rifle. I'd been looking for about a month at old CMP target rifles as that was what I was really looking for. However when I found this rifle with a price tag of $750 I changed my mind. I do a lot of transfers and rifle buying from this shop so I was able to convince him to let me buy it for $650 out the door with tax.

I'm sure excited about getting to spend some time at the range shooting this rifle and improving my basic skills that I've been ignoring the past few years. I figure a good shooting sling and a few thousand rounds of .22 lr will provide good practice. The scope is just a little more than I need and only focuses down to 25 yards which isn't down far enough for the indoor range I'll be using it at.

TaylorForce1--Several years ago you could buy the Leupold 3x-9x with EFR new for $307. I watched EBAY for them and without fail they all brought at least $275. Makes em a $32 scope---what a bargain.

What happened to the range at Slaton. When Iived there (Lubbock), other than the indoor pistol range, that was about the only rifle range in the whole area.

That range in Slaton sold right before I headed down there think it was called Rustic Range. The new owner is trying to take it private range with a $1200 a year family membership and daily usage fee. I've heard other things as well but anyway if that is the case then it is too rich for my blood.
