Whitworth 25-06 question

I have a friend at a local shop that traded for a Intraarms Whitworth rifle with a Mauser action in 25-06 that I got interested in. All my rifles are push feed Remington or Weatherby, so I'm not too up to date on how these actions. My question is when you load shells into the magazine and close the bolt to chamber a round the bolt head just pushes the shell into the chamber; and when you open the bolt to remove the shell if you don't slam the bolt closed and pull it back quickly the shell will slip off the bolt face. I assume the action is not supposed to function this way, I thought it would hold the round in place while feeding it into the chamber, hence controled round feeding. The gun is in good condition and I would assume if there is a problem with the action it should not be that big of a deal. Thanks for any thoughts or advice.

You should load the ammo into the magazine. The bolt should start it forward and the base of the case "should" slip under the extractor. Sound like the case is either jumping out of the magazine in front of the bolt or the extractor is too tight and not allowing the case to slide under.

Now that I reread it sounds like a 243MKX I had that the extractor didn't extend far enough over the base to hold it.

Either way sounds like an extractor issue.

As usual just my $.02

I agree that it sounds like an extractor issue. I'm more interested in the rifle however. I just pretty much built a Whitworht rifle in .25-06, do you have any pictures?

Here is what mine looked like before I refinished the stock and KG Gunkoted the metal.

Here is what the finished product looks like.

I did mount the scope a little lower.

Thanks for the help, I also think it's probably the extractor. Taylorce1 I will try and snap some photos this weekend, I purchased the gun because I don't have anything in that caliber and I thought it would be a nice project gun. Yours looks great, I would also like to coat the metal on this gun. The stock on mine looks like a Fajen, so I would assume that it is not orginal. What style rings and basses is that on your gun, looks like a leoupold? This gun had rings and bases that I put a scope in, but they sit a little too high and I would like to replace them with something else. The store I bought it from did not have any other bases in stock that would fit the gun. Goning to see how it shoots today or tommrow depending on the weather here, supposed to ran this afternoon. Any suggestions or comments on these guns would be greatly appricated like I stated above all mine are pushfeeds, and I'm also new to the 25-06 caliber as well.

I like the 25-06 I have two one is the original MKX Cavalier Modle nicer wood rosewood tips. This stock is origianl except for the recoil pad.

This one has been refinished with a matt blue

Both have the factory barrel and both have no trouble giving me MOA or less. Only thing I have noticed is both like loads near max to settle down.

Both of those are really great looking guns! Seeing all these great pics are getting me ready to start on mine. I didn't get a chance to shoot mine today but I will tommrow. Since our deer season is at hand I will have to wait a few months before I start to work with mine. I want to refenish the stock and do something with the metal, however the blueing is in good shape. First priority will be finding a load that it likes and hopefully getting a deer or two under her belt. I'm leaving for Texas on a whitetail hunt on Tuesday, we'll see tommrow if the 25-06 will make the road team. Thanks for all the great pics guys keep'em coming.

Excellent looking stocks guys!

I just got a Mark-X in 25-06 a couple months ago. Just started refinishing the stock yesterday actually. The action sitting in a synthetic until then. I'm very excited to get it to the range, just need to buy some ammo.

Yes it is a Leupold base and low rings. My little project started out as a Zastava action with set triggers. I took it to Rich Riley of High Tech Custom's and had him do the metal work. 26" Lilja barrel #5 contour, recessed target crown, plus he blue printed the action. He bedded it as well in the first stock I had for it.

It originally had a Carlo walnut stock on it that would have looked similar to the top one ramrod340 posted when finished. It had some grain runout and broke in half at the recoil lug. Found a guy that goes by the handle Karnis over on 24hr Campfire and he gave me the stock it now wears.

According to the good oil if you remove the bolt from the rifle and slip a loaded cartridge under the Mauser (or Mauser type) claw extractor, the bolt should be able to be held horizontally with the cartridge firmly held in place by the extractor. Even a big bore cartridge with a heavy bullet should be held to the bolt face by the extractor.
