I have a Ruger MKII 6.5x55mm and my son a Savage 6.5x55mm 22" McGowen SS Match barrel magnum contour...

We want to run 120gr Rem CL's for deer at moderate-warm velocities...

Thinking of trying IMR 4350 because we have that powder on hand...

Could you share your experiences with a 120-grainer bullet on deer out to 250 yds max...

I actually prefer the 120 grain Nosler BT in that weight range, though I must confess much of my 6.5x55 shooting has been with 140s in the 2700-2750 fps range.

The 120 grain Rem is a tad soft but will work very well for deer-sized game. 2900 fps is a realistic goal, but 2800 fps will kill them just as dead. And your IMR-4350 will do very well with your 120 Rems.

Load 'em up and have fun... thumb

250 yds is pretty much a chip shot...with a 6.5 bore and a 120 grain bullet...

while I have some hot load data to run them at 3200 fps, even 2400 fps will be a decent 250 yd load...

like Bobby, I prefer either the 120 grain ballistic tip or the 125 partition for those heavier animals.. to include elk...

most 6.5s will work with whatever you feed them...

I get 2890 fps chronographed with 45.0 grains of IMR 4350, Win brass and Fed 210 primers in my Rem 700 Classic with Nosler 125 grain Partitions. They shoot 0.75 inches at 100 yards. Similar velocities with 120 grain Nosler Ballistic Tips but not as accurate. Got over 2900 fps with Nosler manual max loads at 45.5 grains but groups opened up to 1.25". Partitions perform great on animals too.

You have the good guns so load them up.

4350 is the right powder and 3,000 is achievable with the 120 bullets.

They kill deer quite nicely out to at least 350 yards!

Thanks Vines...I've heard alot of good about the 120 grainers on deer!!! I know a couple of avid hunters here who swear by the 120gr. Rem CL's and since I got a lifetime supply I thought I'd give it a go!... Big Grin

I can shoot comfortably out to 325 yards if the conditions are right, but I prefer my shots to be within 275 yards if at all possible...If not I will try to stalk in closer or I'll pass on the shot if I can't...just me... Wink

I have two 6.5's, A Sako AV in X55 and a Steyr Prohunter X57. The Sako loves IMR4895, 4350 is a good one as well. Others that have worked well are Varget and RL-19. The Steyr shoots under 1/2" at 100 with 130g Accubonds and RL-19. Basically Medium to Medium slow works well in the 6.5's. 120's to 130's the Sako is right about 3000fps the Steyr 3100.
