Quick question: When necking the 25-06 up to accept the 6.5mm bullet, is there a need for fireforming going with the standard 6.5-06? I assume there is with the 6.5-06AI. I also presume that the standard 270win powders are gonna work well for the 6.5-06: IMR4831, H4831, and Rl22. Anyone have a good source for a (3) die set for this round? I can find the (2) die sets at Midway, but no (3) die sets. Thanks.

When necking the 25-06 up to accept the 6.5mm bullet, is there a need for fireforming going with the standard 6.5-06? I assume there is with the 6.5-06AI. if you neck up a 25.06 case you get a 6.5/06 BUT with a thin neck , thinner than the 30.06 reduce to 6.5 , original chamber in 6.5/06 ( JGS drawing ) is 0.300 neck , wich is rather broad to allow thick neck , if you open up 25.06 best is to go with a tighter neck as 0.297 I made my 6.5/06 from 270 WIN case trim to 06 lenght and a light neck turning . after you doesn t need fire forming 6.5/06 have the same head space and the body shape as 06 family I also presume that the standard 270win powders are gonna work well for the 6.5-06: IMR4831, H4831, and Rl22. that right include to Vita N165 , H 1000 , AA3100 and other Anyone have a good source for a (3) die set for this round? I can find the (2) die sets at Midway, but no (3) die sets. Huntington in Califorinia can deliver that in RCBS ( the real 6.5/06 ) , Redding dies are made for 6.5/06 A SQUARE ?, I dont know what it is as difference but that seem not a regular 6.5/06 you can use a Redding S die neck die in 270 WIN with a bushing in 6.5 if you want / need a good neck die . Good shooting and enjoy the very best 6.5/06 DAN TEC

Figured I'd use 25-06 brass since I have a 270win and don't have the 25-06.

Using .25-06 brass to readily tell your 6.5-06's from your .270's isn't a bad idea. Increasing the inside neck diameter from .257 to .263 or .264 (.007 inch or less) is hardly going to thin the necks appreciably. As a matter of fact, a lot of once-fired .25-06 brass would likely accept a 6.5mm bullet prior to resizing, depending on the looseness of the chamber of the gun it was fired in. By the same token, if the neck diameter of your chamber is on the "generous" side, you might best be served by necking down .30-06 brass. This will give you a thick enough neck wall to do some neck turning for eveness if necessary, and will also give you a headstamp different from you .270. Provided the '06 brass is new or no more than once-fired, it will likely be very easy to reduce it with one pass through the FL die. Also, by starting with the larger brass, you will be able to compensate if the base-to-shoulder length of your chamber (headspace) is longer than factory .25-06 brass so that you have perfect headspace and no (or minimal) case stretching on the first shot. The same powders which work well with a 130 gr .270 will do will with a 120 gr in 6.5-06, and likewise with the .270/150gr and 6.5/140gr. My alltime favorite is Surplus 4831, which is almost as slow as IMR 7828, or a grain or two faster than RL-22/MRP. Today's H4831 should do nicely, also.

Forgot to mention, no need to fireform the standard 6.5-'06. Only need to with the improved version. (6.5-'06 AI)

WPM; Redding catalogs a 3 die set in 6.5/06. As someone who loads the 6.5 x 57 and 6.5 x 55 and 260 Rem, as opposed to the slower powders listed ( RL 22, H 4831, IMR 7828) I would like to suggest the mid range stuff. IMR 4895, 4064, RL 15, H 380. In the slightly smaller cases, they do better or equal to the slower powders. In fact I have started using the mid range powders in the 270 and it does a good job. Little less velocity, but dramatical increase in accuracy in my Winchester Model 70.
