How many out there have tried converting the 5mm Rem Rimfire Magnum to centerfire? I converted a M591 that I purchased new about 1970. I used the Shroeder conversion that uses a new bolt head instead of butchering the original. Very nice piece of work. I am loading 6.8gr Alliant 2400 behind a 33gr Hornady V max @ COL of 1.515" COL is too long to fuction through the magazine, but it puts the bullet about .010" off the lands. I load it "single shot". According to "Quickload" this load is grossly over pressure, but velocity figures suggest about 39,000psi @ 2450fps MV. (MV measured over a Chronograph) This is well whithin the specs of the Shroeder brass that is formed from 22 Hornet brass. Primers don't even flatten out against the fireing pin and bolt face so I think I'm okay pressure wise. With a MV of 2450fps and the scope mounted 1.5" above the bore axis, I get a Maximum Point Blank Range (MPBR) of + or - 2 1/2" + to 206yds. Zero is about 180yds. Trajectory is about -8" @ 250yds. Accuracey is consistantly 1/2" or less for 5 shots @ 100yds, opening up to about 1 1/4" @ 200yds when the wind aint blowi'n. I have a Leupold 3x9x40 VX II on it. I use the bottom of the top duplex @ 100yds, the top of the bottom duplex @ 200. I have taken a Woodchuck @ about 150yds, one @ 35yds and a Crow @ about 175yds. The Woodchuck @ 150yds was in an open hayfield on a calm morning so I could hear a pretty good "splat" when the 33gr V Max took em through the neck. It costs me about $.15 a shot, and I think it beats a 17 HMR all to hell. I am still getting over 250ft#s @ 150yds. That is more thsn the 17HMR has @ the muzzle.

I've been waffling around about converting mine and you sure are making it tempting. Who did your dies? Do a search on this forum and I think you will find additional info on the conversion.

I bought the whole "shootin match" from Schroeder. That consited of The new centerfire bolt head complete with extractor, 100 cases formed from 22 Hornet brass, RCBS FL dies, "Go" and "No Go" gages along with some 40gr .204" FMJ bullets that I planned to use on "edible" small game. I was pleased with everthing except the bullets. They where .001" oversise and inconsistant as to length and the radius of the round nose. They did not group nearly as well as the Hornady V Max. Rim thickness was a little inconsistant on the cases. I segregated them by rim thickness, but could not tell any differance in accuracy. I back the FL die off to only partialy resize the neck any way so that headspace is on the shoulder. Accuracy is on a par with the original factory rimfire ammo, perhaps a bit better. Ballistic performance is a "quantum leap" as far as I am concerned. I am going to look into some of the "Berger" bullets, either the 30gr or 35gr versions so that I can get similar MV with something that will feed through the magazine. A friend of mine that owns a gunshop has several of these rifles in the "back room" and is interested in converting one for a "fur load", and is therefore interested in the repeat shots. The 33gr .204 V Max has great external ballistics as in it shoots flat, but I fear that this bullet would over penetrate @ long range resulting in pelt damage. From what I have experienced, I believe it is designed for much higher MV.
