Would the 224 Barnes bullets create too much pressure in the 22 Hornet?

Not trying to be a smart ass, but usually its too much powder or too fast a powder that causes too much pressure. I have not had the best luck with the Barnes varmint grenade or the 53gr tsx. My cooper hornet likes 40 gr. hornady vmaxes.

My Hornets (CZ 527 and Martini 12/15) both prefer the 35 grain V Max.

I don't think it will cause too much pressure, but I'm not sure it will shoot well in your gun. But the only way to know for sure is to try them. I shoot a .309 bullet in my 30-30 and it loves them.

Both of my Hornets have barrels that are 224. But, I know one guy who shoots 224 bullets in his 223 barreled hornet regularly, with no problems. Just throttle back on the powder charge when developing loads.

I've tried Barnes bullets in my Kimber Hornet, their solid 45 grain copper bullet. I found that even with a 1-in-14" twist the long Barnes bullets would not stabolize in my rifle. Bullets intended for the Hornet are your best choice.

I have a .223 bore 1-in-16 twist hornet and it just loves the heavier 55gr and 60gr bullets. I am getting in the region of 2700fps with 55gr Hornady SP's seated deep to fit the magazine. My rifle's chamber is a little large and the throat is a little deep and I use the larger capacity R-P cases and Lil'Gun. (I do not size my cases at all and this does reduce pressure with Lil'Gun in my rifle).

P.S. If I use a little less powder, my rifle's barrel gets very hot very quickly! (And accuracy is not as consistant). Go figure! bewildered

I don't think the 36 grain Varmint Grenade will stabilize in the hornet. Its to long for either 14 or 16 twists. Mine likes the old Barnes Varminator 40 grain bullets that were discontinued a couple of years ago and it LOVES the 35 grain Hornady. DW

After doing a whole lot of bullet testing with three Hornets, the best bullet for accuracy turned out to be the Sierra 45 grain Hornet bullet, using either Lil Gun or H-110 powder. One rifle didn't like Lil Gun, the other two did.

The pressure discussion in Hornets is always about the bore diameter, .223 pre war and .224 post war. The loading manuals always make reference to this, however, in my experience it has not created any problems at all. I shoot a pre war, 1941 Savage Model 23, and it likes 35 V-Max .224 with 13 grains of Lil Gun. Excellent groups, and dynamite on jack rabbits.
