My cousin and I each have 6x45 rifles in Sako L-461 actions.
Mine can accept cartridges 2mm longer than his, not the chambering, but the length of the magazine. Can someone explain why this is so? I know that there are different origins of the same models, but it is still odd.
It would help if his could accept longer cartridges as they seem more accurate. Thanks

Yes, I mean the .222 Rem/ type actions. Both rifles were .222's.

Just a pity one rifle is limited whereas another is not. The load we both use really needs a longer overall length.

Your question piqued my interest. I just measured five L461 actions and one successor A-I action. The magazines (as measured by the floorplate opening, run about 2.15" on the older ones with the "s" shaped magazine release, but about 2.25" on the newer ones with the round push-button release, or about 2.5mm difference in favor of the later action.

I do have one rifle with the old-style release and the longer magazine, but it is a custom job with a mixture of old/new features, so it is probably an exception to the rule.

Thus, it appears that if you want a very slightly longer magazine in a Vixen you should look for one of the newer actions with the round, plunger-style push-button magazine release.

I suggest you maybe load to mag length for what you carry in the box and load the one you single load in the chamber longer (if your throat permits it). That way you have quick follow up shots if you need them and the desired performance for the first shot.
