Its gonna be a good one.
It got off to a lousy start with a 139 grain Hornady sst with IMR-4350. 1st 3 rounds were really bad. I was worried, but my next graoup with a 120 grain balistic tip over IMR-4064 was right at an inch.
So i set the Hornady load aside and shot a couple more groups with the balistic tip.
They were not as good as the 1st but exceptable.
Then my 3rd load, a 125 grain partition over H-414 gave me three 3 shot groups the worst of witch was just over an inch.
These loads were with used brass that was primed when I bought it.
I have already resized and primed the ones I shot with Federal match primers.
I am going to work with H-414 and both the Nosler bullets for now, I have a real good feeling about the balistic tip with the H-414 and the match primers...tj3006

Thomas:

Is your 6.5 x 57 Improved? What velocity do you think it will give with 130 grain bullets? I notice that Swift now makes the scirocco in a 130 grain pill with a very high BC. In a 6.5 x 57 intermediate Mauser (a Mexican for example) it could be a great deer combination.

Thanks,

Jordan

Mine is not improved.

Mine is on an short mag 98.

You are the first person that I know with a 6.5x57, but if Forster makes the dies, it is a popular cartridge.

NO he isn't there Tnekkcc....

It is my favorite Cartridge...I have one on a Model 70 action, which has a heavy magnum contour PacNor barrel, that is 28 inches long...It has dropped 3 blacktails so far in its life...

The dies I got with my rifle are, RCBS group D. Group d dies are prety spendy, I think 100.00. Huningtons has factory RWS brass for about 1.00 a pop.
I will probably buy 40 or 60 more. I have about 75 brass now and 25 of them are fres un loaded...tj3006

TJ,

I don't shoot a 257 Roberts, so I use Winchester 257 + P brass for mine.. or 6mm Rem in a pinch...

I bought my Steyr 6.5x57mm at Cabela's last year (my second 6.5x57mm rifle). Started to try handloading with brass made from .257 Roberts and 6mm Rem, then got hold of some S&B factory ammo which the Steyr likes so well I have not tried handloading since. Incidentally, I've been running a parallel test with a .257 Roberts and +P ammo. The Roberts has proven very accurate with that factory ammo (way better than my handloads), but the impact on deer is nothing compared to the impact of the 6.5x57mm. Of course, two deer do not a real test make, since one was a white tail (.257) and the other an Axis(6.5), both shot at the same range and from the same blind. Over all, I think I like the 6.5x57mm better, then I like 6.5mm cartridges too.
