Hey Covey,

Glad to hear Gasgunner is on the forum. I had the pleasure of stopping by his shop this April. Heck of a nice guy.

I agree with you on the flat top configuration. When my eyes started going to hell at age 42, I knew it was time to get an optical sight.

I wonder if Derrick is back from his active duty tour. They will probably make him chief armorer for the whole US Army, and keep him for the next ten years. I'm squarely in the "simpler is better" camp.

My service rifle for high power matches weighs 14 pounds, mainly so it will "hang" better in the standing position at 200 yards. It has a Wilson barrel that John had turned and chambered by Frank White at Compass Lake Precision in Florida. It will be a while before I could justify a Krieger barrel. Outside of competition I prefer something a lot handier. That is one of the beauties about this design. You can make it into what you want.

This may sound funny, but if I were back in the service in a SOCOM unit I would carry an M-14. The AR is a pretty good little unit for CQB, though.

I'm just tickled we are having this discussion. didn't seem likely a few short years ago.

PS Sounds like you need to come up to Idaho next spring for the ground squirrel season. 400 rounds a day on average. Hmmm, that's 20 full magazines of shooting pleasure.

I hear what your saying about that eye thing.
I'm getting closer to 60 than 50.
Had to give up on that big win at Camp Perry dream years ago.
Mainly a bench bound steely eyed paper killer these days, but it's fun to shoot my CMP rifle from the bench and let bubba with the 10x scope at the next bench see the results.

Built a flat top with LW barrel and no float tube several years ago.Standard a3 looking rifle
weighs 8 lbs with loaded mag.
Even with my mediocre shooting skills, it will shoot small groups as long as you want to stuff mags into it at a rate of about 10 rounds per minute.

Those Wilson barrels will shoot just fine especially if those guys you mention get hold of it.
Had one 2 barrels ago and it was perfectly acceptable.

I heard Derrick Martin had TDY as a PR man for the Democratic National Committee.

Sounds like those ground squirrels are getting out of hand.
As long as you engage them at long distance, mebbe you won't get overrun.
Call if you need backup.

good hunting

If you've got the lower in one hand and the upper in the other, it's a matter of putting the two pieces together(they only fit together one way) and pushing in 2 captured pins with your thumb.
Takes about 2 seconds.
Absolutely nothing to it.
