Just getting around to putting my 22-250 back together. It is a simple factory MKX with sevral 1000 Rds through it. Yet still shoots .75MOA like it did when it was new. Still has about 98% bluing.

Anyway for the first 20 years it wore a 3-9 steel weaver which got traded off. I went to install a new matt weaver and it just didn't look right. (yep call me anal) This is really just my plinking rifle (100-200yd). No real long range work anymore. Looking for a GLOSS variable in the 12-14.5 range smaller than a 50mm. Would like to stay around $350 or less.

Suggestions?

As usual just my $.02

I have a Tasco 6x24x50 on my 22-250 but I think tasco was bought by bushnel. When I bought it I only paid under 150.00 for it and it been a real good scope.

A little bit more than you want to pay, but excellent scope, nonetheless. Jay

ramrod340....one of my favorite scopes is a Leup.vari-X II in 4X12....I bought mine in 85 or 86 and it is as clear today as any of the newer scopes I have....I used it for years on a Rem ADL in 22-250 for coyote hunting....If I have a need for a scope over say 7 power this would be the scope I would buy today....Haven't got a clue what they cost in U.S.D... Smiler...mic

I'll second Low Wall's opinion. The current VX-I 4-12 is identical to the old Vari-X II for all intents and purposes and is priced $249 everywhere (although "under the counter" discounts can pull a few bucks off of this price.) I own two of them (along with two earlier Vari-X II's). All perform admirably. As example, I was shooting with a good friend just after Christmas who had just purchased a Leupold VX-III 4.5-14 30mm tube long range model for his new .22-250 (around $750 or so). We both agreed, after shooting both scopes exensively, that there was no practical difference in his scope and mine.

If you insist on "click" rather than friction adjustments, you can get the corresponding VX-II for about $100 extra.

A huge advantage of the Leupold is that if you decide for any reason you don't like it, you can get back about 80% of what you paid in resale. Most other brands will likely cost you 50-80% in "instant" depreciation (selling a Tasco, Simmons, or BSA is about like trying to sell yesterday's newspaper.)

Stonecreek. I'm happy to hear about the VXI. I have an old VXII 4-12 on my STW and it has worked great. I have not looked closely at the VXI but friction is fine with me. I've also had good luck with the simple Burris Fullfield II in 3-9. Thought I might try the 4.5-14.5.

I have a simmons on a 22 I'm not impressed. BSA is a non starter.

I just looked at the new 4.5 x 14 Nikon Buckmaster at $279.00... side focus for parallax, clear optics, nice target adjustments....

Several of my rifles will see one sitting on top of them in the near to distant future....

I believe they are also available with the Mil Dot reticles also!

cheers

Ramrod-
I will always recommend Leupold. The only one I ever sent back for repair was returned to me within two weeks and looked better than it did when sent in. It cost me nothing -not even postage, and I have nothing but good to say about their customer service.
It is true too what others say about selling used scopes as Leupold is the only one drawing attention and $$ on the used market. The only scopes I've seen that routinely surpass Leupold cost 5X as much (AO, Unertl, the European jobs).

Buckshot,

Not sure what you mean by "It is true too what others say about selling used scopes as Leupold is the only one drawing attention".

I currenty have more VariXII than anything else. Followed by Burris Fullfield. I have not tried any of the new Leupold line. I'm leaning towards trying the new VXI second choice would be the 4.5-14 Burris.

I might be blind but in viewing my friends high $$ scopes I have never been able to see that much difference.

What I mean is that of all reasonably priced scopes sold as used, Leupold generally commands the best prices. By reasonably priced, I mean those that sold new for less than $500.00
All bets are off with the more expensive makes however.
I have nothing against Burris (and do own one), but I have had the best luck with Leupold. Everything I own (except target rifles) has a Leupold on it excluding a few vintage Weavers, one Burris, and one Nikon. I wanted to keep those guns original and in their period.

On my 22/250 I have just traded off for a .243 I had a leupold 6.5-20x40. It was brilliant, it will now rst on the .243.

Now I feel that leupolds are at a certain point where you get the most for your money, the law of diminishing returns applies from here on in.......yes you can spend more, much more, but your not getting that much more. Granted the Euro scopes are better, but are they twice as good as they cost twice as much in Oz at least. If I where rich yeah I would own all swarvo's or, Night force and Khales........but I am poor white trash so leupold is where it's at for me !! Big Grin

Try a Nikon Monarch in 5.5-16x 44mm.
$345 in a Lustre finish.

Better optical quality than the VXII. All around excellent scope.

Monarch 6.5-20x44 at ultout.com for $390. If you really can't break $350 though, I picked mine up on Ebay for $340 and I would easily pay retail for it. It's an excellent scope and a tremendous bargain.

I have the Bushnell 6400 in 6x24 (old Bausch & Lomb) and am delighted with it. The optics are very clear. It's just an excellent all around scope and comes with two front end extensions, 3 1/2" and 5". I think it's a very good value for the money. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

seafire, We agree on Nikons!! The new SF 4.5-14 is a winner!!! Using one on a Model 7 Synthetic .204 and just yesterday put another one on a Ruger #1 in .243!! Also have at least 3 more of the original Buckmaster 4.5-14's with traditional AO's on various stuff!! Only Leupold in the safe at present is a 3x9 EFR on a 541-S Remington!!! Leupolds can't hold a candle to the Nikons in "low light" situations!!! Nikons are right up next to the PENTAX LIGHTSEEKERS for tough shooting situations!!! I like the Leupolds for their "resale" value!! Buy them at yard sales and then "resale" them!!! Amazing what a name means!! GHD

I just put a buck master 6x18 on a new rem 22/250 and so far like it.It isn't the newer on with side focus or the target dot.the dealer didn't have the new side focus in when I bought it or would have gotten that one.
I have about a dozen buckmasters and one monarch.and to me the buck master is as clear as the monarch.
I looked at the new ones when they came in nd noticed that the 4x14 buck master mill dot din't have the half mill dots in it.Have 2 with this feature and really like it.
Have lepould too and sent one back last year the service was great and fast. And then have sent nikons back too and their service was good and fast too.

I use Leupolds, Nikons, and Burris in that order. For your purposes and with a gun to my head, I'd say Leupold. IMO it's almost impossible to wrong with a Leupold.
