Gidday Woodjack,

The best performer I have come across for the sort of game you have specified is the Speer 90gr hotcore.

This has been my experience but others have also had good results with a 95 gr Balistic Tip. This is with 243 win and 6mm rem.

If it were one of the magnums all bets would be off as I have no experience with these but I would try a partition style bullet because of the increased velocity.

My choice would have to be the Barnes X or Triple Shock. All others seem to pale by comparison.

Some of the best luck I had was with the good old Sierra 100gr Spire Boat Tail. Excellent antelope and deer bullet. Stainless Winchester Featherweight in 243.

I've used the original Nosler Solid Base (lead tipped) 100 grain bullet for years. It seems to be plenty tough for the larger game you would tackle with a 6mm, and provides excellent accuracy. The solid base of guilding metal gives it somewhat deeper penetration than would ususally be expected from a cup-and-core bullet.

Nosler produces them for ammunition loading companies, so they are irregularly available as overruns from Nosler or Shooter's Pro Shop. As far as I can tell, they are not sold by Nosler through the regular distribution channels, so you don't usually find them in stores. You can find them from time to time on ebay.

Of course, for a little more money, the always dependable Nosler Partition is available.

You are absolutely correct. I really like those bullets and have stocked up. The 7mm/140 and 30/150 are among my favorites.

The 150s, launched at a sedate 2780 fps from a 20" .308, have been shooting through hogs like a hot knife through butter -- and dropping them on the spot.

And best of all, they shoot to the same basic POI as the Ballistic Tip in the same weight and do so with eye-popping accuracy.

waveIt's all history now, but the best mule deer killing 6mm bullets were the 110 & 115gr Barnes' Originals out of my 6mm.270IMP. Fred chambered the fast twist barrel for me and made the bullets. They were Dy-no-mite and a half. Winkroger

you neglected to mention caliber or twist on the barrel...

For max thump with a 6mm in my gunsafe...

I have a 6mm Rem, with a one in 7 twist barrel on it.. one in 8 will be fine tho...

it is on a long action Model 700...

it will shoot Berger 115 grain Match bullets with an MV of 3250 fps, from a 24 inch barrel...

I haven't chronograph the same load out of another 6mm Rem, on a Mauser action that is long throated and has a 31 inch bull barrel on that one....

Handloading a 6mm Rem, I can pretty easily match published 240 Weatherby velocities without sacrificing case life....

But if you go with traditional bullets, the 105 grain Speer SP or the 100 grain partition can get some pretty fast velocities out of a handloaded 6mm Rem.. they do better than my handloaded 243s do...

Isn't that the caliber that does everything a 6mm Rem does, it just needs 20 % more powder to accomplish it??? lol

Well you see, Ive smoked the 224weathmag,270weathmag,300weathmag,all departed now, seems 240wm missed out...but! theres 240wmLW sitting on shelf at the local, little black devil looks and feels so svelt and its charms tempt me to buy and hoe into some hogs.
20% more powder you say, isnt it always the same...own the car, still paying for the petrol.

Woodie,

my 6mm Rem is pretty plain jane..

it has a Boyd's stock on it, because I hated that glossy Rem Factory ADL stock..

The barrel is actually a factory reject Pac Nor..that I got for cheap in a horse trade...

NO Cadillac here either, but It sure does a good job when you pull the trigger!

Depends on where you plan to hit your animals. I never waiver from either the neck just in front of the shoulder or in the ribs just behind the shoulder and half way up from the bottom of the chest. Favorite bullet is the 80 grain Remington PSP which is not a corelokt design. It is however jacketed a bit thick to be a good varmint bullet and penetrates a bit better than the Hallowed 85 grain Sierra BTHP.

FrownerThere was some mention in this thread about the 105gr. Speer. Back in the 50s and 60s Speer was my go to bullet manufacturer. It was the 105 grain 6mm bullt's performance that started to kill that romance. I ran out of Barnes' bullets that week end and loaded up a bunch of 105 Speers. They were more like shooting varmint bullets out of th 6mm X .270 IMP as attested to by the game I shot AND LOST. boohoo

That bullet ,however, may be great out of a .243??? I will never know from experience. sofaroger

Well Roge,

I can't speak for your older vintage Speer 105 grainer...

All I can speak for is the ones that I have used in the last 10 years in 6mm's has not performed like a varmint bullet at all...

They did the job they were supposed to, just like a partition....

someone gave me 500 plus of the 100 grain 6mm partitions... but I still purchase a box of 105 Speers when I am going to hunt with the 6mm or the 243s...

Well to put in perspective, John, ; Yes the 105 may have been of a frailer construction but hitting large mule deer under 50 yds. moving at 3300 fps. might have had someting to do with it. I imagine on puppy dog sized coastal deer rotflmo that bullet would do just fine shocker. stir out of your 6mm.roger

See what you started WOODIE? dancing

Gidday Roger,

Gee mate isn't a 6mmx270Imp somewhat overbore. Crikey that would be a real barrel burner wouldn't it. What was it like on game. I would think it would be a great varmint round.

Tell me more about this mighty slayer, it has piqued my interest.

Happy Hunting

In March I went on a weekends roe stalking with the chance of a red stag. Having hitherto blasted roe with a 30-06 and never seen a red I thought that life being what it is the best way to see lots of reds was to take my short barreled moderated M700 243. Seeing as it is also stainless I would also be ensuring nice sunny days Smiler

The load was a stiff charge of RL22 under a 105gr hot core spitzer seated long at 2.8". The velocity 2,800fps nicely stabilised by the factory barrel.

Beautiful sunny days ensued - I shot 5 roe which died convincingly but with less reaction to shot than with my customary 85gr bullets. I passed on a red stag in thick cover partialy obscured but did shoot a 250lb pricket at 40yards though the top of both shoulders removing the major vessels of the heart. There was a small hole in and a small hole out plus a near totaly detached heart. The animal made 50yards stood for a second or two and fell over dead.

105gr speer at 2,800fps carefuly placed worked extremely well.

At that velocity level I would fully expect that the 105 will work just as you showed it did. I may not learn from personal experience about the 105 at .243 level, but I certainly did from yours. beerroger

I have had good results up close on deer and the wife far off with a 243 and Nosler 95 gr Patition.

Also on deer up close ie under 200 yards with the 257 WBY Mag using 100gr and 120gr Nosler Partitions.

It is hard to beat the Nosler Partition for all round use.

Also, I have never had a problem getting top notch accuracy with them.
