Joe, I've been interested in the 228s also. Always wanted to put something together in the old Savage 22 HiPower. But like you say, where does one find readily available bullets that don't cost and arm and a leg?

Hornady still makes a 70-gr bullet specifically for the .22 Hi-Power, which is .228 caliber. I would think finding a barrel would be a bigger problem, though. What quality barrelmakers today offer a .228 bore? Then you have to deal with custom dies as well. Good luck, though, it definitely is fun to play with stuff that's out of the ordinary.

Don't forget the old .220 Weatherby Rocket. I see Sisk .228 caliber bullets on eBay from time to time. George

I load for the .22 Savage Hi Power, and have found no problems in obtaining the bullets (Hornady) in 70 grain. They are special order though through my local gun shop. In stating this, the Savage Hi Power has given me fits in reloading. Will say the old 99 shoots the more moderate .228 handloads very well. Am thinking of resizing 30-30 brass to see if I can make this loading process easier. Any help would be appreciated.

GeorgeS, Did you mean the experimental .228 Weatherby perhaps, a 257WM necked down? I always thought the Rocket used .224 bullets. I could be wrong though.

Jayboid, Try resizing .25-35 brass to .22 Hi-Power. I find this is a lot easier than using .30-30 brass; no case loss with the .25-35 brass when necking it down. In my .22 Hi-Power I use Speer 70 grain round nose bullets. Yes, they are .224" in diameter but I have had excellent results with them. Have also used Winchester 64 grain Power Points which are also .224" in diameter. I also use the Hornady 70 grain, which I believe are .227" in diameter with excellent results.
