I voted for the .257 Roberts only because the .243 win and .260 Rem were left off the list. Why the two most logical options were omitted is a puzzle. Glad to see that reason prevailed and the OP went with a .260 Rem. Why was the .240 Weatherby considered? Do you really want to spend as much for a box of 20 factory cases as you would for a box of factory ammo for a more practical cartridge? Do you really want to burden your nieces with a long action, long barrel hardest recoiling 6mm available? My only other suggestion would be to not go too short on barrel length. My son's girlfriend has a real cute Ruger 77 carbine with the 16" Barrel chambered in .243 Win, and that thing is much LOUDER off the bench than my .270WSM with its 24" barrel. While the recoil is not that bad, that muzzle blast would almost guarantee a flinch for new shooter.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

I didn't vote because I feel the 260 Remington is perfect for your needs but not listed

+ another vote for the .260 rem.

The 260 rem would be my first choice in a short action too, but that was not an option in the poll

i know, that is why I did not post a vote in the poll

This is leading me to consider the Win 70 Featherweight Compact for grandkids and smaller frames. It has 13" length of pull, 20" barrel, 39.5" overall. However, once the Win Compact is chosen, then the calibre choice is simplified to factory offerings of 243 or 7-08 (assuming one doesn't want the 223 or 308).

Get a 243 or 260. You'll regret being stuck with one of the oddballs.

7-08 is an oddball?
The 260Rem isn't even offered in the Win70 Featherw. Compact, though I don't see anything wrong with a "6.5-08" (approx=260Rem). H2O capacity of 260Rem is listed as 54.8 grains, while the 7-08 is listed as 55.2 grains according to AmmoGuide formulae. Either would be great, it just depends on finding the right rifle.

May I suggest a rifle design that has the best safety. The M70's, Kimbers and even the Ruger have a three position safety that controls the firing pin and allows the unloading of a hot chamber very safe.

The Rem. 700's also have a brazed on bolt handle and are only push feed.

As to the cartridge get what you want however the 243 was not listed.

Get the 'power' or optic that your eye likes instead of what someone else says.

When we go to the doctor they ask us what lens we like!

Do that with your optics.

I voted for the .257 Bob. I've never had much use for anything Weatherby. Nothing qrong with them I suppose, just over rated and way overpriced.
I dismised the wildcat cartridges because if one lost their ammo on a hunt one would be screwed unless they lived very close to the hunt area. That pretty much left the .250 Sav. and the .257 Robt. I picked the Bob. Big Grin

After 28 years with a Ruger 77 and selling and trading countless rifles in many different calibers I still go to my Roberts each deer season here in Michigan. I have yet been able to find a rifle/caliber that I enjoy shooting more than this combination.

I voted for the .250-3000. Since you're building this rifle and not buying off the shelf, give it a 1-9" twist barrel so it will handle bullets up to 120 grain. Should work great for everything up to deer, with light recoil and minimal muzzle blast.

I voted for the .257 because it was the best choice of those listed. Years ago I bought my son a .257 for his first centerfire.

That being said, if I had a chance to do it over again, my first choice would probably be a .260 Rem. Having seen it used on everything from coyotes to moose I have become a believer in the .260 as an excellent low recoil choice.

Out of the ones you listed, I'd go 257 Roberts. mine is a joy to shoot and kills as effectively as much larger calibers.
