Finally bloodied my little Pierce 6.5x47 Lapua with the Barnes 127 gr LRX @ 2800 fps yesterday, here in Montana. Day 5 of a 5 day hunt for elk/deer finally brought me a chance to see what my little guy could do. An hour into shooting light, 2x2 and 3x4 Mule Deer bucks sky lined themselves @ 500 yds. This same hill brought my best bud and his neighbor 3x4 and 4x5 bull elk 5 days back; both with 6.5x284's running 140 VLD's @ 3050. Killed one DRT; the other within 50 yds. My little 3x4 took the 127 gr LRX through both lungs, broadside. Sorry to say, bullet recovery was a moot point. He performed a near 70 yd death run and thankfully piled up against a 24" spruce tree other wise would have slid several hundred yards down the 40 deg, snow covered, slope. Pics to follow when I get home. Alan

Alan, someone said the LRX is supposed to open at a lower velocity than the TTSX. I can't find any verification on Barnes' website; do you know whether this is true? What did you think about the trauma inflicted/wound channel? Can you say what the approximate impact velocity was? thanks! friar Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.

Great story. I'm excited to see photos when you can get them posted.

I've received both verbal and email verification that the LRX's minimum opening velocity is 1600 fps. I've shot with one of the guys responsible for it's development. I loved the results on yesterdays mule deer buck. The pass through was high rib cage to rib cage. Lungs were very messed up. This is how I found him. Impact vel would have been 2085 fps. Alan

That is interesting! My one hesitation with the Barnes are the reports of X bullets failing to expand well. I'd have a lot more confidence with a bullet designed to expand at 1600 fps than one at 1800 or higher. Thanks for all the footwork! Enjoy the venison, too! friar p.s. put a bug into your friend's ear that a 140 gr. .277 bullet would be nice - or a 130 gr. Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.

A very well placed tree, indeed. At what distance did you say you took the shot?

Wow! That 2nd pic reminds me how deceiving distances can be! When I first glanced at it, I would have guessed the hilltop to be a mile or two off. Then I noticed the trees in the fore & midground, and compared it to the tree about 1/2 to the summit (the small lone tree on the left of the pic). That little tree way out in the distance changed my whole perspective...and it was at that point I could "see" it as a little over 500 yards. Interesting - thanks! friar Our liberties we prize, and our rights we will maintain.
