Perhaps this isn't possible, but I am looking for a quieter alternative than full power coyote loads in my 25-06. Max range would be about 150yds.
Eventually I hope to obtain a Hornet, but for now the 25 will have to do.

Try IMR 4759 it works great for reduced loads. 18 grains might be a good start.

If you look on hodgon's website for load data you will see a load for IMR trail boss and a 100gr Hornady bullet. 14.something minimum to 19.something maximum. Bullet traveling around 1700fps with a max load. I am sure the report would be around that of a 22mag or similar. It would work for 150yds or under.

You will be impressed with the down-loads once you figure out which you want. I did it years ago in Az for my .243. I took a 70 grain SX down to 2300 fps and it was great. It did not tear up the fur and killed really well. With the reduced velocity, you will probably be better off with a more frangible bullet. A heavier bullet may not open well and be like shooting a solid which can lead to a lost animal.

Look at the reduced/youth loads at Hodgden's website. If the 25-06 isn't listed there is a recipe for reduced loads using H4895. It gives the instructions there too.

My oldest nephew is about to get a 25-06 for Christmas...lucky guy!!

Anyway, I bought him some 75 Hornady hollow points & we're gonna try some reduced loads. Did some figuring and we're going to start @ 27gr of H4895 should be good for coyotes out to about 200 yards!!

Thanks for the info. Just finished my deer hunting with the 25-06, so I will look into these recipes. I assume I should stick with "varmit" bullets vs the 117sierras i am currently using to assure expansion.

Use cast bullets. A 30-06 can be reduced down to blast and recoil level of a .22 rimfire. The 25-06 would be tame indeed and the cast bulets should work great on coyotes.

Useing the rule of thumb for smokless powder that for evey % change of the load weight (up or down) you get the same % change in speed and double the change in pressure (5% less powder gives 10% less pressure) and a 75gr bullet w/4895 and Hog's 60% min. load works out to 28.8 grs for 2185fps and 10,16 cups of pressure. Max load is 3600+ and 51,000 cups.

Here is a PS: to my last post. If you go with a bigger buller(117gr Hor RN) that is ment for the smaller 25s at lower speed (25-35/25Rem/25Sav) then the minum load of H4895 would be 24gr @ 1679fps and 10,100cups.

the 4895 works very well downloaded.
i use the rem 86 gr in my 257 bob at 2400 fps.
i thought it was quite a bit slower than that till i put it over my chronograph.
the recoil is rediculously mild, and it's very accurate.

All these loads will kill coyotes at 150 yards but most of them still have a loud report..Even my 25-35 shooting the 86 gr Rem 25-20 bullets at 2200 FPS is pretty loud, that and it wouldn't shoot for beans in my 94 SRC Win..The gun shoots factory 117 gr. bullets at two inches at 100 yards..The 86 gr. Remingtons went to a 3 ft. plus group, that's big! rotflmo
Needless to say I pulled the bullets and went back to square one..I have tried those bullets n several win. and they never work...They might shoot in your 25-06 however load them to about 2200 to 2300 FPS and they should be explosive on varmints.

Ray and others: My goal for downloading the 25-06 is to find a relatively quiet 150yd Coyote rifle. If downloading isn't significantly quieter, then any recommendations for rifle caliber? I have always read that the Hornet is effective and quiet. Any others?

I haven't tried the Trail Boss out just yet, but did pick a bottle up to play around with. I have however used the H-4895 loads in a couple of rifles and they are somewhat quieter, but still have a pretty decent report.

Given that my 25-06 barks everyone on my friends 1500 acre place knows it was me that shot, I would have to say that any reduction would help. If I were to drop the loads down I would probably go with the 100gr Sierra or Nosler Ballistic Tip. Either of them should reliably give at least double caliber expansion down to around 1700'ish fps. Might not be ideal for deer, but for a yote should be just fine.

30 grains of 4198, or RL7 with any bullet weight 100 grains or less would make a good load in a 25/06... a 90 grain Sierra FMJ would be a good choice of bullet to use..
