I went elk/deer hunting to day and saw a bunch of elk but no shots I was comfortable with. On the way out I ran across this dude standing broadside at a Leica'd 72 yards. Hit him behind the shoulder and a bit higher than I'd of liked with a 290 grain hardcast gas check so he walked about 20 yards farther and as the herd took off he laid down. That was farther than I wanted to shoot so I waited and watched for about 15 or 20 minutes till his head wobbled and he went sleepy bye.
I was alone so when I got back to town I went to the sons house and recruited him to take the compulsory ego shots. I say he's a 5X5 but my son whose into the trophy phase of hunting says "if the brow tines are over an inch they count as a point", they are so I guess to him it's a 6X6 but to me it's still a 5X5 (to my eastern friends a 10 pointer Wink ). Still pretty decent for a handgun deer so I was pleased.
As we talked of handgun effectiveness in the other thread I thought I'd post these here in "Small Calibers". Here's the first one.

I'm the chubby dude standing up, he's the chubby dude laying down. I took him to a taxidermist friend to let him remove the cape to use in shot up head mounts and he figured he'd go 300lbs, huge body. He said he'd like to do a free European mount for my giving him the cape, can't argue with that.
Here's the other of him and the instrument of his demise. Ruger Redhawk with a 6 1/2 inch Pac-Nor barrel and Bowen thicker blade, old guy sights.

Sorry for posting under the wrong topics but this is the place I hang out at here on the site and I had to show somebody Big Grin .

Nicely done. No question the forty-four is a better choice for deer than the two-oh-four .

Yeah, I noticed it looked like he had to put his wedding band on his pinkie finger, that deer was so heavy made his hands swell!

Nice buck, would make anyone's ego swell also!

Congrats, esp. open sighted, nice shooting!

Congrats on a TERRIFIC buck!

I just got back in this morning (opening day of the general season here in south central TX) and only saw 8 does. There may have been more deer around, but the fog was so thick, I rarely could see more than 40 yards.

Good eye there 6.5, you missed your calling if your not a detective of some sort Big Grin, regular Sherlock Holmes Wink.
Too much duff time of late and with all humility aside I'm a hell-of-a cook and seeing the smile on my sweet wifes face when I cook one of her favorite meals is a real pleasure to me.
I oughta get the ring resized but that's like giving up and admitting I'm gonna stay here Frowner . usually I drop 20 during big game season but dumping a buck the first day ya go out doesn't help much towards that end. Thanks for noticing Mad Just kidding lol.

mountdog, I was being 'visually acute' but I never meant nor thought anything about YOUR weight, I was talking about that heavy deer, honest.

No detective, but feel I am analytical, wish I had more deer, etc. to 'study' with these eyeballs......never have seen TOO MUCH game in the field. Glad you got a nice one.

Sure your wife enjoys your cooking skills and perhaps the venison. Enjoy it.

I was just joking with ya 6.5. I been enjoying a bit much of my own cooking since I retired and it's a point of good humor with most of my buddies and family as well. I figured any guy astute enough to spot the pinkie ring was astute enough to know why I'm wearing it there Big Grin .

Different species, different sizes Seafire. This is a high mountain Mulie, lots of time to grow.
I've read Black Tails are close to the Mule Deer genetically but quite a bit smaller in stature. Like a Cous Whitetail compared to a whitetail from Saskatchewan. Yours is a beautiful animal and I'd trade ya the finished product as I'm willing to bet yours eats a bunch better than mine does. Jerky and sausage time.
