A friend as a Rem model 700 in 243 Win. I'm trying to figure out which configuration it is. It has a hinged floor plate, it does not have the J lock, the metal finish is a matte finish like the "Express" grade shotguns (sand blasted texture). The bolt is even matte finished. The stock is plainest blandest looking wood I've ever seen on a 700, hardly any grain showing, with a non glossy finish and stamped/pressed checkering. Do you know what the call this variation? I have a chance to buy it and I'm trying to figure out what it is. Thanks "aim small, miss small" Benjamin Martin

It would almost have to be a model 700BDL or Classic if it has the hinged floorplate. The ADL doesn't have this feature. I don't think any of them have a stock like you've described. Maybe I'm just missing something here. Best wishes. Cal - Montreal Cal Sibley

It sounds like a "hybrid" to me. Like Cal said, the floorplate says BDL or Classic. But, the matte metal says ADL synthetic. (Although the varmint and police "BDL" models were matte, they were heavy barrel versions.) My guess is that somebody had an ADL synthetic, "upgraded" it with BDL bottom metal, and dropped it in a cheap aftermarket stock.

It is called a "Classic - Birch Stock". I had one in 22-250 that I bought new from a rem dealer in the box. I changed the stock out but really liked the full matte BDL barreled action. They were uncataloged and may still be available, I dont't know. They were priced somewhere between an adl synthetic and a true BDL. RJS

Thanks Guys for the replys. RJS, I was going to post that the stock was likly "Birch". You probably nail it, as this one has a sporter barrel. "aim small, miss small" Benjamin Martin

Claybreaker, Back a few years ago, when Remington was phasing out the Model 788, they came out with a cheaper version of their 700 actioned model called the Model SP 78. It had the birch stock and a plain blued barrel. Godsdog.
