All this talk of the .22 Hornet and 45 grain TSX made me want to load some. So I did. These are sitting on 12.6 grains of Lil Gun with Federal small pistol primers. Cartridge overall length is 1.800” Which is a little long, but if I measured correctly, I’d have to load to 1.94” to engage the lands in my gun. Given my Hornet’s preference for light bullets, I’m not sure they will shoot well. These puppies are loooonng. I’ve tried everything from 55 to 35 grain bullets. So far the 35 grain Hornady V-Max has given the best results. But I’ve got some 30 grain Bergers loaded to try. I hope to get to the range of Tuesday or Wednesday. But I might go hunting instead. The gun is a Savage 40 single shot that was made a few years ago. One of the best gun purchases I have ever made.

I'll be very interested in your range report. For me, the hornet is a small game and varmint round but I do enjoy reading of what others can coax out of it. Good shooting.

Well, I agree with you about the purpose of the Hornet. A couple of our stands give the possibility of 70 yard and closer shots so if these shoot well, I might try a head shot. But given how long these are and what my gun apparently likes, I don't think they will shoot very well...... LWD

I have a large stash of the 45gr XLC's, so I have not used the TSX, yet. When I run out of XLC's, I will try the TSX in my Hornet. I'll be waiting to hear your range report.

No, not yet. But I'm itching too. If I get enough work done, I may be able to on Thursday or Friday of this week. LWD

Years ago a friend(an inveterate handloader) bought a CZ-527 in 22 Hornet. He was thrilled to find the long throat in the CZ. He modified the magazine to take cartridges WAAAAAY over max COL. He seated the 45 gr bullets with just a bit of bullet engagement and shot a load of way over 13gr of 296. He got 2900 fps over his chrony and accuracy of amazing small groups. After he died I found some of the loads in his things. I haven't tried them in my 527 but They were smokin' loads with no pressure signs. Anything Worth Doing Is Worth Overdoing.

I've never understood the desire to make the little Hornet into something that it is not and wasn't designed to be. There are only about two dozen factory .22 centerfire cartridges with larger capacity, stronger brass, and the ability to launch heavier bullets some to much faster than the Hornet. I like my Hornet loads gentle, quiet, and easy on the brass. They'll take apart prairie dogs out to 200 yards, and if the dogs are further, I'll grab something bigger.

I would hesitate or approach that very carefully as a long throated gun will take up to 8 or even 10 more grs. of powder in some cases if the magazine allows and not be safe in a std. Hornet.. It is just another way of making a 22 K Hornet out of his gun. Its a great practice in many calibers IMO..I have always done that in my 7x57s, 8x57s and the 257 Robersts. That Tidy Cat bucket in the picture makes me think you might have a good target to try them on.
