Hi LouNH In Your H-BAR, what powder do You use with it? I will be using it in a Bushmaster 16" barrel, with a 1-9 twist. I am hoping for 1 MOA. We'll see.

Hi everyone......... Do any of You have any experience with Winchester's 64gr .224 bullet? (in 1-9 twist) Is it any good? Is it accurate. I have heard good and bad about it, but I'd like to talk to someone who KNOWS and hasn't just heard..............

Sierra is now making a 65gr Game King bullet which they recommend for 1-10 and I'm sure the 1-9 would work as well.

I have loaded it up in both the 223 and the 22/250 for loads for youths to use. I have found it accurate in both calibers. Winchester loads it in the 223 and 22/250, or has in the past, since it is all based on sales. On deer like the West Coast Blacktail which are antelope size they work well. Shot placement is key, but that applied to any caliber. I don't buy into the "margin" of error factor the bigger or the faster the bullet goes theories. For smaller shooters, less recoil will mean more accurate bullet placement. That applies to a load of full grown men, but not all want to admit that. Of course it will work on smaller game, like coyote etc. It has also been accurate enough to use on prairie dogs etc. Cheers and Good shooting seafire

Sir: I have shot this bullet in an AR-15, 1/9 twist 16 inch barrel, and a Browning A-bolt, 1/12. It shot very well accuracy wise in both. I have not had an opportunity to use on game, although I escorted the rifles around the woodlot to make the introduction. ned

I dont know what you mean by "any good" but if you mean does it kills things ... yes. I've loaded them for a recoil shy friend in his 223 and he has one shot kills on 3 deer and a small bear (155#). Only one bullet recovered, the bear, and it was a perfect mushroom of about 28 cal. Choose your shots very carefully like he does, and it will work fine.

I'm assuming you're asking about the 64 gr. PowerPoint. I've been shooting these bullets for about 8 years in my Colt HBAR with 1 in 9 twist. My "untuned" handloads are reasonably accurate, grouping about 1-1/4" at 100 yards or 2-1/2 to 3" at 200 yards with a 3x Colt scope. I feel they would do better with tuned loads and a better scope. There was an article in American Rifleman about 10 years ago regarding using the .223 for deer. This was one of the bullets studied. As I recall, it performed quite well - it came in second after one of the very expensive premium hunting bullets. Good expansion and retained weight. The only negative is that I shot a juvenile coyote dead-center through the chest (side view) with one at 200 yards, and the terminal performance wasn't very good. The coyote ran about 20 yards, and the bullet didn't seem to expand much. I think a 45-55 grain varmint bullet would have been much more effective.

buchsenschmeid - I checked my load book, and I'm using 25 grains of either H335 or WW748 with a CCI standard primer. The H335 load appears to have a slight accuracy advantage. I don't own a chronograph, so I have no idea what velocity I'm getting, but my notes indicate that the recoil seems mild compared with commercial "military spec" loads, and there are no high pressure signs.
