OK Guys and Gals

I have a question… I have a Remington bolt action model 592M in 5mm Remington . Anyone have any idea what it is worth? It is in good condition but has some nicks in the wood. Works good, looks good but has been used some. Also, anyone have any idea where to find ammo and how much it is???????
If you have any information on this rifle please contact me at

Hogslayer,

The chances of finding ammo is like hitting the lottery! It was last produced in the 70's. A friend and I both had 5mm's in the early 80's. We found ammo in a gun shop in Montana in 1982 and bought 22 boxes for $7.00 a box. I'll bet he still has nineteen boxes, as well as the rifle. I sold mine years ago with 10 boxes of ammo and bought a .223 Rem. If you can find ammo, it will cost between $50-$75 per box. Other than that, you've just got a pretty little "cow-stob". Possibly a gun collector may be interested. Might try ebay.

TYhere is a smith that offers centerfire conversion for that rifle. Then you reload your own.

Post in the gunsmith forum and someone will find the guy for you.

Ammo is not to be found and if it is it's not to be afforded.

Not sure what it is worth, but would guess between $100 to $225. I have the same rifle converted to the centerfire 5mm Craig by Eagle View Research It is a nice shooting vermin rifle for small lots and farms 200yds. The bullet is the now popular .204 caliber.

I lost a lot of respect for Remington when they dropped this round from production. It was only alive for a few years, after being advertised as the next great thing to hit the market. A lot of shooters lost a load of money when the rifle was rendered useless. We need some type of protection from the manufacturers lack of scruples. Just one mans opinion. Best wishes.

Cal, I'm sure the bean counters are scratching their pin heads and bulb-asses; attempting to tell the boards of companies just how they lost their loyal customers. The 5mm rimfire magnum would pull a lot of sales from the 17 HMR if it remained on the market, it was a nasty little ground hog rifle and still is with the conversion. Riflemen like the no recoil and low noise of these various small "zippers". They are fun to shoot and will always have a place in the shooting market. When the 17 HMR was introduced as well as the 204 Ruger my thoughts jumped to the Remington and its abandonment of several introductions. Oh well I ramble on. Good shooting and always keep something interesting to tinker with.

Hello Quarterround,

It's not the first time Remington pulled the plug on me. I have a .222Rem. Mag. that Big Green decided to drop from production. A lot of shooters don't realize that Remington had one of the best benchrest scopes around. It came in 20X and 24X and also bit the dust. It wasn't that these items weren't selling. Remington simply felt it wasn't making enough money from them. Back before there were so many custom bullet makers Remington had the best selling and most accurate benchrest bullet around, a 52gr. HP. which without warning they dropped from production. Seeing as how we had few alternatives a friend offered to buy the bullet making dies so production could continue for the benchrest shooters. Remington declined, preferring to destroy the equipment and take a tax write off instead. My loyalties lie elsewhere now. Best wishes.

A centerfire is what the 5mm should have been in the first place. If I had a 5mm rim fire I would look into a conversion. The last time I saw a box of ammo for it, they wanted $50 for a box.

It performed well as a rimfire and the price for ammo was driven up when Remington stopped manufacturing it. My only choice was to abandon the rifle completely to a novelty item or convert it.
