FWIW, guys and gals, the following is quoted from page 6 of "Hunt & Trap 2005" published by the New Brunswick Department of Natural Resources.

"Deer, moose and bear hunters must use: A centre-fire rifle of any calibre. Or: A shotgun with ball, slug or lead shot larger than size BB or steel shot larger than size F. Or: A bow having a draw weight of not less than 20 kilograms together with arrows that are fitted with broadheads no less than 20 millimetres in width. Or: a muzzle-loading firearm."

So, if I was lucky enough to get drawn, I could use a 17 Rem, 22 Hornet, 25-20, etc., should I own one, and be in perfect compliance with the law. That said, most moose hunters of my acquaintance use heavy bullet loads for their deer rifle, e.g., 150 gr. 270; 175 gr. 7RM; 180 gr. 308, 30-06, 303 Brit; 170-175 gr. 8mm. Personally, I'd go with my 35 Whelen, but then I'm a gun nut, and own more than one centre-fire rifle!

Cheers, Al

Moose can be very large up to 1800lbs in my neck of the woods,I again believe a moose can easily be killed with a 243 but don't see the point!!Just because someone believes in a larger caliber doesn't mean he can't shoot well,it's called practice!Anyone can handle a 30/06 or even a 338 with some range time. The wife has no problems with her 9.3.As for the good old days, animals aren't any tougher ,conditions are. There is more hunting pressure, and less opportunities.Moose were also taken with spears in the old days,I can't recall the last time I saw a spear hunter in the woods.

A friend of mines daughter killed her moose this year with her 243.It took 5 shots the last one being in the head.It also too the moose about an hour to die.I talked to another socalled hunjter who let his son shoot a grizzley 6 times with a 243 and it ran off wounded. The 243 does not belong hunting anything larger than 150 pund deer.I use to use it and it really sucks on big bucks.I lost two perfict behind the shoulder shot bucks both 10 pointers.I quit using it on deer forever after that.If you use it for moose and get charged by a grizzley make sure you dont piss off the bear too much before he eats you. There are jecks I have taked to that use 22-250 on moose thats bs and should be illegal.Georgia changed its handgun for deer law to include 25acp to be a legal deer gun.Its any centerfire handgun.I wonder if the 25 acp guys have bagged many deer.

Americans get too hung up on power. Swedes and Norwegians shoot literally tounsands of moose every year with the 6.5x55. Without passing judgement on ethics, if I were to hunt a moose with a 243 I would take a 100 gr Barnes X bullets, sneak in within a hundred yards and plan on placing a couple of bullets through the heart/lung area.

Anyone who claims the 30-06 is ineffective has either not tried one, or is unwittingly commenting on their own marksmanship

I agree it's not all about power, but a 6.5x55 with a 156gr rn is a different cartridge than a 243 win.If a hunter will pass up on all shots over a 100yds,and is patient enough to wait for a perfect broadside shot, then the 243 will work, but so would a 22/250.

Gidday Seafire,

Once you have used that 460 on your ex I can let you have a go at a couple of mine.

Seems rather a large calibre to take care of a parasitic leech but I do suppose you gotta make sure they stay shot.

You don't want them to come back and haunt you do you.

Use your X-bullet and don't listen to these folks on here putting you down. There are documented kills on brown bear with a 17 Remington. Just make sure your comfortable with your rifle and bullet placement. Good Luck!

I don't believe any of the comments were intended as put-downs.people were just stating there are better tools for the job!But since it's for a friends girlfriend, more than likely there will be a back up shooter. If they are indeed going to use the 243,I agree with the statement on the x bullet and get close for a very well placed shot.

.243 would bring a moose down with a well placed shot. And if you think about it most moose can be stopped or called back after being shot. I remember watching the Outdoor Channel, and some fellers was on an elk hunt. After searching the woods and stalking an elk. They heard something behind them, it was bullwinkle big one too. The critter was so curious that he walked right up to the hunter and camera man. The hunter actually scratched the moose on the nose. The moose followed them the rest of the day and actually distracted the elk they were hunting long enough for the hunter to make an excellent bow shot. So getting close shouldnt be a problem a nice 80yrds shot should put a bull moose down with little tracking envolved. But it wouldnt be a bad idea to have a back up shooter with a .30cal just incase bullwinkle deciced to flee in the wrong direction.
