Did anyone ever get a Winchester with a black synthetic stock (Super shadow?) in 223wssm to shoot? I had one when they first came out. It did not shoot at all, so I dumped it. Now I saw a slightly used one and I am having thoughts about buying it and trying this caliber again.
I would appreciate any input and experiences.
Thanks

I had the same experience you did, the Winchester Super Shadow I bought in 223 WSSM shot like crap!! I was never so glad to sell a gun in my life. I would not consider buying another one, ever!

I bought a new in the box mod 70 .25 wssm. for whiteail and other small game. On my first trip to the range I brought some win factory loads 100gr supreme. When I fired them the bolt was difficult to lift the handle but I continued to zero the scope and the shoot some groups. This gun shot worst than any gun I have ever fired. 3-4 inches at 100 yards was the best group. so I checked the scope cleaned the gun and tried again another day the results were tyhe same. I could not belive my results so I took the gun to my gunsmith and had him remount the scope and then took the gun to a local guy that makes realy good custom ammo and left it with him to work up a load, after a few days He called me and said to come pick up my rifle that he could not make it shoot. I called winchester and the service people treated me like I was a idoit and were no help. Just told me to send them the rifle.
I talked to my gunsmith he said that in his experince that they would send the gun back and say there was nothing wrong with it. I belive him after my conservation.
I'm stuck with a gun that I can't feal good about selling so I guese I'll let Kevin Weaver rebarrel and square my action.

The results

Kevin Weaver just finshed my new 223 wssn. He built it on a mod 70 action (from a scraped 25 wssm that only shot 3 moa on a good day) with a 26" 1-14 #2 fluted by Panor. We are still in the barrel breakin and load development stage. It just fired a 4 shot group with 40gr Nosler BTs over 46grs of Varget at 4406 fps into a sub .4 inch goup at 100yd.
We are going to work up the 52 TSX for whittail after we are satisfied with the coyote loads.
It should only shoot better as the barrel shoots in.

We could not get my son's Super shadow (in 223wssm) to shoot either. Best group was about 2", and only with one load. Sent it back to Winchester and they said it shot well. We got it back, and it shot as poorly as before.

My son traded the Win for a Browning Abolt in 223wssm, and this gun can shoot! His coyote load is a stiff charge of RL19 under a 60gr V-max @ 3,700+fps.

IIRC, Winchester/Olin has only offered factory ammunition for the 25 WSSM in 85, 110, 115, and 120 grain bullets. If you were shooting 100 grain Winchester/Olin factory loads in your 25 WSSM, you must have been shooting 243 WSSM ammo.

I ought to go buy a lottery ticket, as I have yet to shoot a bad Winchester/USRA 70 chambered for a WSSM that didn't shoot at least "good" groups. The 25 WSSMs have all shot between 1 and 1.5 MOA with factory ammo and without any tuning.

I know of several .223 WSSM's that shoot really decent groups. Most near MOA.
I myself have a M-70 Featherweight 25 WSSM that shot the 115 gr. silver tips reasonably well, (1.5 MOA average. Had it rebedded properly and trigger adjusted to 3 lbs. It now shoots near .75 MOA average with the 115 factory silver tips. My pet load is the 90gr. Sierra HPBT's over a max load of BLC 2. It will shoot .50 MOA. A fantastic coyote hammer.

Have a M70 Featherweight in 243 WSSM that I bought new for cheap. I have only fired the 95gr Supreme ammo but it shoots less than 1 inch for 3 shots at 100m even with a trigger that feels like 12lbs or something.

Took it apart last night and adjusted the trigger spring tension- that's all and the trigger pull is nice now with only the slightest of creep & overtravel. I was surprised that they actuallly bedded the recoil lug and front of the action quite well with what looked like Silastic. The barrel is floated with contact at the tip but it looks well done.

I do get the hard bolt lift with every round fired (only factory ammo at this stage) but with my low expectation for this round and rifle I was pleasantly surprised. Mine is CRF and it even feeds!

Maybe the later production was better. I live in Oz so we usually get things late.
