If I remember, the Savage guns had a relatively slow twist because the original load was an 87 grain bullet, probably 1-in-12". That was the only way they could make it live up to the .250-3000 name, i.e. 3000 fps. The 100 grain loading was added later.

Now that you mention it, pd, I think you are right. 1 in 14" rings a bell. Regardless, I would stick with 85gr to 90gr loads with it.

All early Savage rifles in 250 had a 1/14 twist, except for an exception in the 99s in the late 40s or early 50s when they played with some 1x12s but settled on 1x10..I have seen the 1950 99F with a 1x14 twist and its listed with a 1x10 twist of which most had..

I believe all mod. 45s had the 1x14 twist to handle the 87 gr. bullet as the manufacturer wanted them to hit the 3000 FPS mark thus the 87 gr. bullet as opposed to the 100 gr. bullet at 2800 FPS, It was a promotional gimmick, and they later came out with 100 gr. bullets with flat bases that would shoot fairly well in the 1x14 twist and was a better deer load supposedly, but many users believed otherwise.

I know for sure if you stick one of those 85 or 87 gr. pills at 2900 to 3000 FPS in a Whitetail or Mule deers lungs, he will bite the dust on the spot 99% of the time. Its killed a lot of DG in its day.

All of the pre-1960 Savage rifles chambered in 250-3000 were cataloged with 1-14" ROT barrels.

I'm a fan of the 87 grain Speers in 1-14" .257" bore rifles. The HotCore style works well on medium game and the TNT works well on varmints and shoots to the same POA. The old, long discontinued, 75 grain Barnes original X bullets work great, but for reasons that escape me, they don't shoot well in all rifles.
