Hello gang

I live in the sticks in Alaska.(kenai)

just got a new rifle (used)in 17 Rem.Someone on a
other site said you had to use only Rem 7 1/2 primer or you would have problems.????????.
have 1000 Fed gold match (white box)and there are
zero Rem 7 1/2 in town.
Will the fed's work just as well?
Hate to think about driveing all the way to Anchorge just to get primers.

Have 3 box's of factory loads 25 gr.It shot 3/4 inch groups.I have just bedded it and adjusted the trigger to 2 1/2 pounds.may do even better.

Getano still shooting the Swedes?.Have 3 of them great guns.

Thanks for any info on the 17. [Confused]

What you are looking for is primer cup thickness. Standard primers will likely perforate. Not sure about the Federals. I use CCI Benchrest and also the CCI#450 Mag. Both are made with thicker cup material. The mags. cost about $10 less.

Hello Pete

Who ever posted the Rem 7 1/2 primer info said they were designed just for the Rem 17 cal,?

Like I said there arn't any in town.Use Fed primers in a 257 WBY they work fine, and seem to be tight in the pocket.Rem seems softer ,seats easy.
The Rem 9 1/2 will fall out in my hand after 3 reloads.Fed's will work up to 5 reloads in the WBY.Then have to chuck the brass.

BTW I go to Kamiah deer hunting in the fall.Friend has a ranch there.Great country.Years ago hunted out of Stanley for elk and deer.In the mid 50's.

The .17 Rem is often built on a .223 bolt and the bolt hole is too large for this cartridge. The ratio of the neck diameter to the primer hole diameter is close enough that you get very high pressures at the primer hole that will lead to primer piercing if the supporting firing pin hole is too large. I had this happen with many different loads irregardless of primer type. I used Rem 7 1/2's, CCI-400's Benchrest etc. Same problem. I thought about this alot and finally deceided to bush the firing pin hole on my .17 to .062 by drilling and tapping the bolt for a inverted hardened set-screw which I then soldered in place (Hi-force 44) and turned flush with the bolt face on the lathe. I then drilled the new .062 firing pin hole and turned the firing pin to match. Viola! Pierced primers were a thing of the past! I was able to up the load another grain and hit some very impressive velocities.-Rob

Your idea of bushing the firing pin hole is very interesting. I have 2 17Rem. A M700Rem. and a L46 Sako single shot with a Douglas barrel. I have no trouble with the primers as long as I use CCI Benchrest or #450 mags. But your approach makes sence, I'll have to remember that one.

Thanks all

feel a little better with the info you gave on about the primers.
have 1000 Fed gold 210 m to burn up.But will stock up on the 7 1/2 Rem.

This is a used rifle, but shoots great.1/2 to 3/4 at a 100 for 3 shots.Who ever had it did the Sako extrator mod.
18 shots and fouling was nothing.About like my Swift. So that isn't a issue at this point.

Thanks again.

I'm not the one that said that the 7 1/2 was designed for the 17 Rem but I've got one that refuses to shoot with anything else stuffed in its pocket! Its the damndest thing I ever seen. I've tried it with every small rifle primer made but I always come back to the Rem 7 1/2 for the .17 For everything else I use the Federal 205 match.

An easer way of eliminating primer flow and cratering is to order an oversized firing pin kit from Hollands Gunsmithing of Powers Oregon.

Well I did make the trip to ANC and solved the primer issue.Picked up a case of 5000 Rem 7 1/2 match. All the same lot #.The only 2 box's of bullets and 120 peaces of brass.
For the AK folks here,Boondocks sports .gave a discount with out asking.
Have CCI bench rest and FED gold match,so one of them should work.
Today the bullets came from Calhoon,Nice looking bullets.
Ready to blast away now.

Thanks for the help guys.

six bits,

I have only used CCI 400s in mine and no sweat. Sorry I didn't read this before you made the trip to Los Anchorage.

Hello Getano

Wasn't a lost cause trip,Weather was good,sunshine.
Had a nice lunch.
Boondock gave me a good deal on Primers and brass.

Primers are what I plan on stocking up on,Also a couple brands of powder.
Back in about 97 primers were very hard to come by.So like to have a bunch on hand and the same lot.
Was shooting today and the 17 started to pattern.Thought it had fouled the barrel.Turned out to be the scope.up and down adjustment gave out.A Burris signature 6x24.So have to send it in for repair,Put a old 6x18 Simmons had laying around.
Shooting 25 gr Calhoons, groped well tel the scope pooped out,Win 760.with the 7 1/2.primers.26 gr and no pressure signs.
Looking for a good groupe then will chorny them.
Next will be hornady 25's.

Thanks for the reply.
BTW what loads are you using ?.
