Festus, I happen to be trying the same bullet through my .25-06 Sendero SF. Loaded a couple of variables with H4831SC if I recall correctly. Changed seating depth between variables of 10. The Barnes site says that best accuracy is found by longer bullet jump. They suggest at starting .050" off the lands and adjusting in or out from there. I haven't shot any of the variables I loaded yet but I'll try to pass on some accuracy/chrono data when I do.

Have shot a 90 grain HPBT for years with 4831, I would start working up loads with the bullet just kissing the lands. After you find a load that is working good then I would back it up a little at a time to see if your group improves. Every rifle is different, ever lot of powder is different so if you find a lot that works good than go back and buy more of that lot number, if not you may have to make some changes in your loads. Different brands of 4831 works very close to each other. Good Luck

Ken- HOw are things going over there on the west end of town? YOu shooting at the Horace range or the Cassleton range?

I haven't tried the Barnes, I just find them too expensive for only 50 bullets. I have been using the Sierra 90 gr HP and haven't found a decent load for it yet. Everything that I have read about the Barnes, as DogBuster says, is to seat away from the lands. I figure there must be something to it.
If you go to the 24HOurcampfire site, there is a guy there (Bigstick) who seems to think that the 25/284 winchester cartridge with a barnes bullet is the cat's meow. Perhaps he can fill you in with load data- he seems to have plenty of experience with these bullets.

I have been using the Hornady SST (117gr) and the Nosler BT (100 gr) in my Ruger 2506 for deer and the 75 gr Hornady Vmax for smaller things. The Vmax has been the most accurate for me, followed closely by the Nolser. The 90 gr Sierras, I purchased at Scheels in the closeout section a couple of years ago. Just decided to try them to get rid of them.
I am trying some leftover Hogdon H414 with them, IMR 4350 with the Vmax, and Re 22 with the SST and BT. Doing the Standard "start low, work up" procedure. I got best accuracy with the Vmax near the mid range load, Nosler are one grain below maximum and the SST is a half grain over max.

Again, none of this helps you with your Barnes quest, but there are other options out there too.

What other powders did you try with the 75g VMAX's that gave decent results?

Try 50.0 grains of IMR 4350, Winchester case and CCi LR primer. This load produced loads around 1 -1.25inch groups in my Savage 110.

Good Shooting,

I don't recall exactly, but I want to say I was at 52 grs IMR 4350 when I hit 3/4 inch groups with the Vmax. I was using data out of the Sierra manual for their 75 gr hp, as I didn't have access to the Hornady manual. Started off low and worked up. This load was safe in my rifle, Sierra lists the muzzle velocity at around 3300 fps with their bullet.

Cooter,
Whereabout are you? Scheels sounds like the sporting goods outfit in my hometown in MT.

Dog-duster, I am located in Fargo, ND. Scheels is a pretty big outfit these days, with many stores in many states. Don't know if they are on the web yet.

.050" off the lands is a good place to start with the Barnes bullet, moving in increments of .010". It pays to experiment. I havetwo '06's and one likes the bullets shoved into the lands, the other .030" back. Otherwise, both loads are identical.

Powders: 4831 and slower!!
RL 19 52.5-56.5
H4831 53.0-57.0
IMR4831 50.5-54.5
IMR7828 53.0-57.0 (From Barnes #3)

Cooter: I've had good results (.5 MOA) with that 90Gr Sierra and H380, 56 grains or so. Check the Sierra manual. If you have any of that powder around, give it a try.
