better for what? The No. 1 would certainly be unique. ________________________ "Every country has the government it deserves." - Joseph de Maistre

I'd use a Ruger #1 as a canoe paddle-better yet as a drift anchor!!!

deraldm - welcome to the AR forums. Though I'm a sucker for a single shot, my personal preference would be either of the Remingtons. I'm sure there's someone who has a differing preference. My main reason is that the gunsmith I use can really slick up a 700 action and trigger. If you can't decide, get the 700, and then get the no. 1 in a few years. But I'll bet that the no.1 will be in a different caliber. Never follow a bad move with a stupid move.

Hey Deraldm, Welcome Aboard! This thread should be a good one, because a lot of folks use both types here. 3. Ruger No. 1 Varminter Rifle. That would be my 3rd choice from your list. No doubt it is a fine looking rifle and "some" tend to shoot pretty well. The only problem is they "typically" just are not as accurate as a Remington. Lots of tips are available on-line on how to improve their accuracy, but why have to bother. 2. I've had a VLS in 308Win that I got simply to beat a guy and his 270Win M70 so badly that I'd never have to hear about his rag rifle ever again. The VLS is a HEAVY rifle compared to the rest of mine and it was absolutely amazingly accurate with a 6.5-20x VXIII and MatchKing Bullets. Just too heavy to tote around on a regular basis. It had a 26" Blue Steel Bull Barrel, so I was concerned about accidentally getting any Rust started on it. It would be extremely difficult to locate a more accurate Factory rifle. 1. For me would be the VL SS simply because of the Stainless. I'd expect accuracy similar to the VLS. Best of luck in your choice.

I’m a big single shot fan and love the No.1 but if you only have money for 1 rifle, don’t buy one. The other choices are better for you.
