OK, here we are. I ordered the Stock, I ordered the new bolt handle, I ordered the scope, bases and rings. The scope is Philippine w/ Japanese glass. I have the same scope on a rifle, have for 16 years. Also have an AO version on my .17HMR in a slightly higher power. Cabelas is having a 50%++ discount on a package of the scope, rings, laser bore sighter, and gun oil for $99.00. Basic 3-9x40mm. Scope alone sells for $179.00++. Bases from Weaver were $13.59 including shipping.
So on this build we are at:
Stock, $89.00 incuding shipping.
Scope and rings, $99.27 w/ free shipping.
Bases, $13.59 including shipping.
Bolt handle, 19.57 including shipping.
Bolt work, $40.00.
Full dura coat 3 color kit and air brush for metel parts. $84.00

Action comes off a basket case/ missmatched 1943 Swede M38. Barrel is good, so it stays. 6.5x55 should do him well.

I want pics when it's done, Jim! Either here, or over at Hunting Chat.

I just picked up an M96 barrelled action to do the same thing with. I traded 15, 30 round AR mags for it. The crown is damaged, so I'm cutting it off to 24" or 26".

It's a long term project, so don't expect pics any time soon.

Hey Phil, you bought a 96 barreled action. I don't think the 23" 38 barrel is a detriment. This one will be done in a month or less. I'll keep you posted as far as the stock. That will be the most work. Wish I had your background on this one. I'm taking pics as it progresses. JP

Truthfully, my experience is all with current military weapons. I take my modern civilian rifles to a shop when they need work.

I can put an AR 15 kit together in twenty minutes but I won't mess with my M70 triggers.

This Swede will be my first ahhhhh...."custom by Phil". As far as barrel length goes, you may be right. 26" may still be too long. I know that the full 29"+ is certainly too long. I won't have any iron sights on it so if I think the 26" is too long, I'll have it cut and recrowned to 24".

I still have many decisions to make and parts to buy (and money to put aside) before I actually do anything with it.

I C&Ped your list for future use... I hope it wasn't copyrighted! Big Grin

Have at it!. BTW, I took a look at my 9.3x57 and guess what, it is a 1943 Husqvarna military action also. Guess it was sportered after 1943, maybe not. No date on the Barrel, but it is a commercial Husqvarna barrel, stock.....

I'll Dura coat her in the spring, but here she is! The scope rings suck. Millet see through. They are being replaced tomorrow.
