Will a 6.5x55 feed properly in a 98 Mauser with a 30-06 magazine length without modification? Thanks in advance.

It does on one of my commercial FN actions, but I wouldn't consider it the rule as this is only one example. Although, I would prefer a small spacer in the rear of the mag box to take up some of the extra wiggle room.

I have two 6.5x55 commercial actioned rifles. One is a Howa 1500 and the other is a CZ550. I can put a 25-06 round in the magazine box of the Howa and it fits. The rifle feeds the 6.5x55 just fine. If it was accurate I would have been content with the rifle.

I also struggled with my Howa 1500 in 6.5x55, until I tried Sierra's accuracy load with their 120 gr Pro Hunter Spitzer (40.5 gr IMR-4064, RP 9 1/2 primer). Did you ever try that one? Consistent sub MOA groups at 100 yards for me off the bench.

Bullets are pretty worthless. All they do is hang around waiting to get loaded.

All of my 6.5x55 rifles have standard long action boxes in them. Neither Winchester nor Remington made special length boxes for them.

I have never tried IMR-4064. What I have tried in the Howa was Reloader 22 and 19, H4831SC, IMR-4831, IMR-4350, Varget, and IMR-4895. I have tried Sierra 85gr, 120gr,and 140gr. Nosler 100 and 120gr Ballistic Tips, Hornady 95gr and a few 140gr, Swift 130gr Scirocco II and some factory S&B and Privi.

In my CZ so far I have tried RE-22 and H4831SC With 130 and 140gr Sierra as well as the 130gr Swift. Every thing I have shot has been more than acceptable in the accuracy dept. Better accuracy than the Howa ever dreamed of shooting.

I've used IMR-4064 in a 6.5x55, but only with 120gr bullets.

With 140's I go with RL19 or IMR4350

RL22 is a bit too slow for the 6.5x55 case

Allan,
Not to start an arguement but my 96 Swede loves Norma MRP/120gr Sierra's/ Lapua brass... shoots nickle size groups, not bad for a 1921 vintage rifle with the factory barrel. MRP and RL22 are supposed to interchange.

Never heard of an inaccurate 6.5X55, they seem to shoot well with many different bullet and powder combo's. My Rem 700 classic is a long action with no spacer in the mag and she shoots really well, my favorite whitetail rig.

I always figured the "intermediate" 98s such as the 24/48 would be about perfect for the 6.5X55 -- or a 7X57 or a .257 Roberts.
