No experience, but I checked COTW, and it looks like simple proposition for the handloader. Oughta be a very nice deer rifle.

Getting brass is a problem and it cannot be reamed to 6.5x57 without setting the barrel back quite a bit. The way I went with mine was to form the brass from 270 Win. The dies cost an arm and a leg in SA.

Paul, I shoot a 6.5 Roberts. Far as I can tell, there ain't a dime's worth of difference in performance between that, the .260, the 6.5x57, and your 6.5 Portugese.

Were I making up brass for the Portugese, I'd start with 7x57 brass. Necks would come up about .040 short, but that's not enough to make a real difference. A purist might use .270, .280, or .30-06 brass, but that's a lot of trimming and you would probably need to neck ream. With the 7x57 brass, all it would take would be one pass through a full length sizer and fireforming.

6.5x57 data is close enough to be safe although I would stay a couple of grains under listed max on general principles. http://stevespages.com/264_10.html

Paul,
Mine was a Portuguese Mauser and I sold it some years ago. I formed my cases from 270 Win because the case necks were smoothly formed and required no reaming, only trimming to length . Starting with 7x57 cases sometimes colapsed the shoulder and left a case neck that required reaming because the neck diameter with a bullet seated exceeded .293".

This reply is a little late as I have had some other stuff to attend to. We only got power back a couple of hours ago.
