I have an old hornet that belonged to my great grandfather.

I fiddled with it a couple years ago, but was never able to be accurate with it. Part of that was probably my reloading techniques.

But I started thinking, maybe part of my issues is I don't know what size the bore is. How do I tell if my bore size is .223 or .224?

Roger, that was just not nice. The common bore size for the 22 Hornet was .222

I know the really old ones are converted 22RF. This isn't one of those. This is a cheap Savage.

I see some .222 bullets for 22 Jet.

Hornady reloading manual uses .224 bullets. But I see I can buy some .223 hornet bullets.

Speer reloading manual uses .224 bullets.

I know I CAN squeeze a bullet .002 over through the barrel, but I thought a correct bullet should be more accurate?

Are we having a problem here with bore dia. vs groove dia. or am I just experiencing another old age brain fart? roger

Being that I don't normally think of bore size, I think of bullet size....?

Your rifle has indivdual characteristics. It is quite possible for it to handle light for caliber bullets of .222 dia. to .224 dia. just fine or neither! I put some .310 dia bullets down my .308 ( groove dia.) barrel and consistantly get small groups at resonable pressures. Bullets of the same weight and .308 dia. do just as well.

Might I suggest you clean the peedidle out of that barrel,for a week, get a bunch of the 34 grain HPs. from Mid South (.224 dia.) and push them with 11 gr. of H110.or h4227. 7.7gr of 2400 might get you what you are looking for also. Sorry I wasn't too nice the first go around. roger roger

If the empty cases you fired in that rifle will freely admit a .224" bullet into the neck before resizing, I seriously doubt that having the bullet swaged down an extra .001", as would happen if the groove dia. is indeed .223", would be too detrimental to accuracy!

But you can always slug the bore to determine groove diameter.....
