BOOMReceived my ER Shaw 22PPC bull barrel for a Stevens Mod 200 last week end.Removed my like new .223 barrel after heating and soaking it in KROIL for two weeks. SmilerThis barrel came off easy and was imediately replaced with the Shaw $165.00 barrel. An expensive $58.00 TRUGLOW 6-24 X 44 scope was mounted in Weaver Medium hight rings.
The initial loading of the Norma cases was next. All the cases chambered nicely as they had been used to set the head space. These were almost Full Length sized. There was no intent to move the shoulder back at all. Two cases were loaded and the bullets seated to determine max. OAL. This could not be accomplished as the neck outside diameter with the bullet seated exceeded that of the chambered neck inside diameter. Frowner after a lot of measureing and fitting it was found that .003" brass had to be removed from the neck diameter to allow approximately .002" neck clearance.
Roll Eyesonce the necks were turned the problem went away. The cases were loaded with 52 gr. FB-HP Berger bullets pushed by 25 gr. of 2230-C , ignited by WSR primers. One batch was set with the OAL at max.2.040" and one batch at 2.018" OAL .
coffeeThe rifle was old style bore sighted at the range. The first shot was triggered with a lanyard as and avid benchrest shooting buddy of mine was concerned about the adverse neck tightness. All went well and the fun began with the 2.018" OAL group. The fist shot on paper after bore sighting was 12 0'clock 2 1/2 " higher than Point of Aim @ 50yds.The next three were 2" high and 1" to the left of POA for a .300" group. The other batch grouped 1 1/2" @ 300 yds. clapThe average velocity of the max. OAL batch was 3094 FPS.and The 2.018" OAL batch's velocity was 3049fps.
TALK ABOUT A PLEASANT SURPRISE!WOW! Eeker beerroger

Bartsche don't you know that Savage/Stevens are POS and that headspacing the barrel with a case is sacrilege?

What are we going to do with you?

nilly

I've got two 6mm contoured blanks on order and I'm thinking of making one into 6x47. Maybe the second one will go to 6mmBR.

Since they're being threaded for my Savage actions, I can headspace and mount them myself. rotflmo

Bill,

My 7/08 barrel for my Savage from Shaw shoots one hole groups at 100 meters pretty consistently.

Haven't mounted the pair of 260 Barrels I have yet from Shaw, but those are threaded for a Model 70 action.

Bartsche: They just marked the Stevens 200s down to $279 at the local Sportsmans Warehouse. Trying ... to resist ... temptation ...

If somebody buys the .416 I have in the classifieds, it's a done deal!

bartsche,

Do these Shaw barrels drop-in to the factory stock???

Or is their barrels a larger contour than factory Savage/Stevens and the barrel channel needs to be opened up alot or a wee bit???

Thanks, ....just want to know what I'm getting into first... thumb

Hunting accuracy is OK with me for a fraction of the price on a PREMIUM... Big Grin

Maybe a 25-06 for the son on the horizon... Big Grin

clapThree of the four droped right in . It appears in dealing with Shaw they duplicate the contour. The PPC is a full diameter and the barrel channel had to be opened up. This was about a 1/2 hour job on the drill press with a rotory file followed by a little sand paper.
WinkOne of the Mod. 200s is wareing a Shaw 250-3000 barrel with a deep throat to handle 120 gr. bullets. This is really a neat cartrige for these light rifles and I'm sure it would be adequite for Island game.I'm supposing that you are a reloader. fishingroger
