Anyone had experience with the Ackley Improved version of the 6mm/06? Worth the trouble or a waste of time?

made one for a fellow about 25 years ago. he was a wildcat junkie. one of those projects that he bought the reamer. also made him a 240 weatherby. he didn't think the Ackley was worth the trouble over the 240.

I built a 240PDK basically a 240Gibbs with a 40deg and blown out just a touch. After burning a lot of powder through it I gave up in disappointment. I was burning a lot more powder for marginal gain at best. Around 50fps gain and around 12-14grs more powder. Pulled the barrel and stayed with my 6mm. For my $$ if I wanted a nice 6mm I would build a 6mm throated to allow me to sit my bullet of choice out to maximize net powder capacity. For the 240Wby 6-06 etc you will need compressed slow powders and a longer barrel would help. Mine was only a 24" As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Thanks for all the replies and the information. It is as I suspected, a waste of time. I run a 30" barrel on my 6mm/06 as it is. It is a fantastic round for our conditions here in Oz.

Yes! Fred Barnes built it for me to shoot His 110 to 115 bullets Circa 1967. It was the hammer of Thor on Mule deer.At the time Fred's bullets were the only bullets that were up for the job. All others were varmint bullets when pushed through the barrel. I had no way to measure velocity at that time. I had a lot of inexpensive 4831 and wasn't really concerned about powder efficiency. Just judged a full case of it on how the bullet it pushed hit what it was aimed at and how it performed on downing deer and it did with authority. The one draw back was of course barrel life but if you are using it just for hunting and not so much paper punching it'll probably only last for a hunters life time. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! We spend 10's of thousands of dollars on our trucks and thousands of dollars on our rifle and a grand+/- on our scope and then we worry if we burn 10-20 grains more powder in our deer hunting cartridges? Weird! With that said, maybe some guys aren't cut out for wildcating since brass prep and loading takes a bit more sophistication and work and sometimes the gains are too insignificant but it's sure fun to have a project to play with! I've never used the 6-06 but I've been around the 6-284 quite a bit. The way it takes a PD or Ground Squirrel apart is amazing. At close range they get blown in half with all the stuff in the middle going up in a red mist that drifts away in the wind. Oh the guy that owns it has been through 3 barrels in the 6 years I was shooting with him. DW
