Should I just summarize and say, Piece of Shit? How about more detail? I bought a 597 about 2 years ago, maybe just under that, as it looked good, had a good feel in my hands, had a barrel that was 2" longer than the Ruger, and was less money. Since then I have come to regret it. The magazines are poorly designed, and cheaply made. I went through the original and one additional purchased plastic magazines. Then Rem. sent me two replacement, which did not work either, then finally Rem. sent me two of their latest metal alloy ones. All have plastic followers which tend to bind in the case, the springs are much too weak, and never have fed their full 8 round capacity reliably. The rifle must have less than 2000 rounds through it due to the problem with shooting it without having to clear jams. And then this last weekend something new happened, it now will not lock shut when a magazine is empty, not only that it fails to feed the last round in a magazine, so the slide is shut, you pull the trigger on nothing, but there is still a shell in the mag. I am sending this rifle back to Remington with a polite request that they refund money as I cannot in good concious sell this rifle to another person. What I would really like is to take the designers and quality control people at Remington out to a field and beat them with a hickory stick. :-) Anyways, to summarize, spend more and get the ruger, do not buy the Remington. Thanks for the review - lets us all know what to avoid - and more importantly why. I did spend more and bought the Ruger - no problems

I have seen several posts from people unhappy with their 597s. Mine has worked well for the 10 years or so I've had it, so I will count myself lucky.

As far as the shooting part, once a round is chambered, it shoots like a dream, dead on. Just not reliable. sending it back to remington, just filled out the papers about an hour ago, will ship later this week. Probably replace it with a Ruger. What I really want is a 10/22 in the magnum, with a folding stock like butle creek makes, but for some reason they say it is only for the 22long chambered 10/22's. Anybody know if it will work in the 10/22magnum? thanks. Red

I too can feel your pain. Had 2 of them. Emphasis on HAD!!! I think they are a good design wrapped around a crappy magazine. Now I have a 10/22 and am very happy with it.
