I'm planning on putting together a walking varmint rifle. I thought I'd buy a used Remington 700. It won't matter whether it's an ADL or BDL, as long as it's wood, and I don't much care what it looks like. I figure I'd put most of the money where it will do the most good - in the barrel and optics. Just buy an older 700, install a high quality, fast twist barrel chambered in .22-250AI and top it with a really good scope. My question is what cartridges have the same diameter bolt face that Remington chambered in their short action 700? Here's what I came up with off the top of my head: .243 Win, 6mm Rem, .250 Savage, .260 Rem, 7mm-08 Rem, .300 Savage, .308 Win, and of course the .22-250. Any others? My dad told me once that if you're gonna kill a rattler with a chainsaw, use the top of the bar.

In that case, I'd find a standard .243 and hand load the 55-58 grain bullets to about 4,000 FPS. It's as good as a .22-250 any day and will double as a walking gun for deer too! I have a sweet .22-250 that sees no action any more as I discovered the .243 is actually the better varmint caliber. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." The .243 or the 6mm would be good choices. I own a .22-250 and a .220swift havent killed a deer with eiether one.(dont cary them, personal preference) But I have taken a few with a 6mm rem. and a 100gr bullet. Still take a few coyotes every year with the 6mm and 80gr.hp's. I dont own a .243 so I cant give you any hands on notes for it, but it and the 6mm are so close seems to me it would be a solid choice as well. As far as your question goes possibly the .223. But I'm not certain sad to say. "Back off man...I'm a scientist."

The 223 uses a smaller bolt face, .378" as opposed to the .473"ers that Doc D listed.

Good suggestion, however, I have a .25-06 for the dual purpose rig. I'm going with the .22-250AI for groundhogs and coyotes only, just 'cause I want one. My dad told me once that if you're gonna kill a rattler with a chainsaw, use the top of the bar.

There's always the 225 Win or the 220 Swift...if you wanna be different.

I believe the 225 Winchester is a rimmed case. What would be wrong with a 22BR, 6mmBR, or a 30BR. Butch
