I just got a CZ Varmint Laminated in .223. After extensive break in, (it had some sort of black nastiness in the barrel that didn't want to leave)I've started load development, the results are somewhat puzzling. So far I've shot V Max's in 40, 50, and 55 grains, and BlitzKings in 40's and 50's. By the way, it has a 1 in 9 twist. The wierd part is both 40's shoot real well, both 50's stink, and the 55's shoot best of all. Only problem is between my ears, cause I've always shot 50 grainers in the .223 and this one doesn't want to. Curious? What do ya think?---Shoot Safe---montdoug

You might try Vithavuori N 133 with the 50 grain bullets. Mine is a 9 twist Douglas barrel and I was about to give up on 50 grainers until I tried N133 problem solved! Shoot great, though it does perfer BlitzKings over VMax or BT's. rooksd1: Is it drying out any up there in Indy? We are due to get all your water starting tomorrow in the White River. It sure ruined my 3 day dove and squirrel hunting trip on the White River this coming weekend! Shoot Safe, Shoot Straight.....RiverRat

Montdoug I have been looking at the CZ 527 in the Kevlar stock in .223. How does yours shoot? What did you pay for yours? Do you think you got a good value for the money spent? Thanks. [ 09-04-2003, 23:46: Message edited by: One Hole ]

Hi OneHole. "Funny you should ask!" I just got back in the house from the last prarie dog hunt of the year. My wife and I spent the last couple days running around 8 sections of dog town's. To say I'm impressed with my new CZ would be an understatement. I discovered the answer to my original question, it's not that it hates 50 grainers, it's that it doesn't like boat tails. My last trip to the range I tried 50 grainers in 2 Hornady versions, the Sierra and Speer TNT. All were flat base , it was all one arbitrary load of Benchmark powder, ( GREAT .223 powder,in fact it's my new favorite! ) all shot well under an inch. I took two loads dog hunting, 40 grain BlitzKings at 3,700ish fps and 55 grain V Max's at 3,300ish both are shooting under a half with a developed load, and no B.S. 3 of each load shot into a group together just over a half inch. I was shooting dogs at 200 to 400 yards with both loads without having to change point of impact. They probably won't all do that, but this one does! By the way, the Varminter with the kevlar stock is pillar bedded, the Laminate stock isn't. I paid $549.00, and on this hunt it was shooting right with 2 Coopers and an Anschutz, the groups aren't quite as small, but I wasn't missing dogs due to the the rifle. I think it,s a " GREAT BUY!!! " One last thing, the trigger breaks at 3.6 lbs unset, and 12 to 14 ounces set. Way cool. I bought this rifle to replace a .223 Varmint Synthetic Rem that's getting turned into a Tactical .20 at Pac-Nor as we speak, this rifle out shoots that Rem for a lot less money. That's how I see it, I couldn't be more pleased!---Shoot Safe---montdoug

While I have not tried 50 grain bullets I would suggest 69 g SMK, 63 g SMP and 60 g V max. All shoot well with Varget.
