I just got a long action Savage 110E 7 MM Remington Mag for a quarter bore build. I originally wanted to do a 257 STW but have not located a Savage RUM. I guess the .257 Weatherby is next in line down the power scale or is there another common factory or common wildcat action to work with that can give me Weatherby or better velocities?

The Weatherby is an outstanding round. My only concern with it is the cost of factory ammo and the brass. I have a buddy who shoots a Savage action heavy custom barrel in 257 Weatherby and he gets outstanding velocity and accuracy.

The 25 WSM is an option but I bet you would have a terrible time getting it to feed in your long action.

If you can live with less velocity I would look at the 25.06 or 257 Roberts AI.

I really like my 257 AI.

I already have a Roberts and will make it an AI if I wear the throat out. I have a .270 so don't need a 25-06.

I reload so won't shoot factory, just will have to cough up the money up front for the brass. Should get several reloads out of good brass.

Feeding problems look like might be the issue for the 257 WSM and since it will be similar to the Weatherby I will most likely go that route.

So a 28" match select varmint taper Shilen barrel on a long action chambered in 257 Weatherby aught to get me by for a good quarter bore. Or I could go with a ..... no stop, or it will never get built.

Could be wrong, but I don't think you could make a 257Bob or AI or 25/06 because it already has a magnum -sized bolt face.

The current bolt face would fit the weatherby since it is coming from a 7mm Mag. With Savages though you can change out the bolt faces quickly and economically.

But with everything considered looks like the 257 Weatherby it will be. One heck of a long range round.

While you are at it send the action to Kevin Rayhill at Stockade in Chadron Ne and have the action timed and trued and you will be very impressed with the work, for not much green. FYI there is more than one Savage guy out there that knows what to do, and won't keep telling you every couple of months that he should get to you in a month or two!

Thanks for that heads up. I will squirrel that bit of information away. Ive heard that timed and trued of the bolt to action makes a noticeable difference.

Swapping out bolt heads is a snap just like swapping barrels. Gotta love the Savage for dexterity.

One thing to keep in mind is the standard Weatherby freebore vs. a standard throat length. You might find yourself in a situation where factory ammo makes sense for some reason. Rifles without the Weatherby freebore don't seem to like factory ammo. It's also hard to get the high velocities without it.
