I think that is the model of the rifle I handled yesterday--not impressed enough to even remember the model number. Stock looked like it was made by a blind man who had downed a bottle or two of scotch. Very poor fit-gap of 3/16" below the bolt release, 1/8" deep notch behind the tang for bolt clearance, and enough space all around the action to pass a dollar bill folded twice (4 thicknesses) anywhere without contact, except for the foreend tip pressure pad. Metal finish was mediocre at best, and with a price of $598 + tax, I'll pass for sure. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

The metal is the former Charles Daly, nee Zastava (Mark X) Mauser, produced in the Czech Republic (if I'm current on what countries in that part of the world are now called). My understanding is that the laminated stock is put on by Remington, so the sloppiness in that department is Remington's, not Zastava's. The Mark X is pretty much a knock off of the FN Mauser and is regarded as a servicable action. It is unfortuanate, in my opinion, that Remington acquired the U.S. distribution rights, which seems to have increased the price of the product and lowered its quality simultaniously.

It's interesting in that for Zastava to switch to Remington has cost them almost a year's sales. They was on the market with Chas Daly and moving to Remington has shot their sales to pot.....mostly simply because they wasn't available! Now we hear disparaging comments on Remington's stocks....this is really got to hurt Zastava! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." I handled a Charles Daly rifle several months ago, and thinking back, the fit and finish was head and shoulders above the rifle I saw this week. An old pilot, not a bold pilot, aka "the pig murdering fool"

The rem 798 is made in Yugoslavia and not the Czech republic. I just bought a Charles Daly and the fit and finish seems to be fairly good. Haven't gotten a dcope yet so I don't know how it shoots. Rad NRA Benefactor Member

I was at G.I. Joe's in Lynnwood, WA today to get some scope rings. While there, I spotted a '798' in the rack, in .300 Win.Mag. I asked to look at it and was very impressed by the overall workmanship of the rifle. Bluing was really nice and even. The stock was fitted well and had a nice satin finish. It said "SERBIA" on the gun. Price was $598.00 and seemed well worth it. That is my experience so far with this Remington product. ____________________________________________ Did I mention, "I REALLY LIKE GUNS"? Serbia! I knew it was part of the former Yugoslavia, but I misstated it as Czech Republic (which is where the CZ's are made I think. Those Balkan countries seem to change names faster than Carol Keeton McClellan Rylander "Grandma" Strayhorn.
