Wondering if anybody knows much about the above calibre? Got the chance of a couple of old Mannlicher schonauer's in 256 and wondered what the modern equivalent was? Could it be the 6.5x57 or something similar?

The .256 Mannlicher is the 6.5X53R Dutch & Romanian round that preceded the Mannlicher- Schoenauer.
If the rifle has a vertical magazine with 5 rounds interal clips it is a M95 Dutch Mannlicher or one of the similar Romanian variants. If it has the flush rotary magazine it is a Mannlicher-Schoenauer. The original MS rifles came in several calibers including the 6.5X54 MS.

I load for this round which is basically the MS round with a rim. What do you want to know about the MS round. Hornady manuals have or at least used to have plenty of data for it. They tend to shoot heavy bullets well.

I had a Steyr marked as a Westley Richards chambered in 256. It is the Dutch Mannlicher round. I believe Buffalo Arms loads ammo for it. Cool little cartridge..typical early European look with the exposed round-nose bullet nearly the length of the rest of the cartridge.
