A friend knew I reloaded for the 22 Hornet and gave me two boxes of Herter's bullets... one unopened, the other has about 20 left. The box calls them "semi pointed". The box also says "World's Largest Manufacturer of Reloading Tools"... that must have been a long time ago!!! Haven't tried them in the Hornet yet. Not familiar w/.222 sized bullets. Anyone have any experience w/these?? The bullets are quite old (just a tad of moss on the exposed lead). The Hornet is one of my favorites, so I'm always looking for good loads. Any suggestions with this bullet? Don't know if the unopened box has any collector value. I don't collect... I shoot, but if someone says DON'T OPEN THAT BOX, I'll listen. Anxious to hear your thought. Mike Si vis pacem... parabellum

Not sure about the bullets themselves but at one time I think Herters was probably the largest sporting goods dealer in the US and maybe the world. They were an early version of say Cabelas or Bass Pro, not sure if they had a showroon or if everything was just catalog sales.

walllll....some of us don't think so!!!!! Herters was originally in Waseca, Minnsota and had a show room there and I visited there often as a youngster starting reloading. They later moved to Mitchell South Dakota (immediately across the interstate from the present Cabelas) and had a large store there. Their large catalogs are collectible but very little else is....if those were my bullets, I'd send them after prairie dogs pronto! /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." FWIW those were the poorest hunting bullet ever.....extremely thin jackets and about like a matchking for deer. Shoot them at the range and don't take them hunting.....again....O seriously doubt they have collectors value. Herters was a spectacular junk dealer. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Herter's Motto:"Herters Takes The Hokum Out Of ____________ "(fill in the blank depending on what they were selling) They sold everything from arrow fletching to pancake mix. Are those wasp bullets the "supersonic wasp-waist" bullets, designed like the fuselage on a jet fighter? I had a 4X Herters scope that served my squirrel rifle well back in the late 60's. IIRC, they got shut down for selling illegal bird feathers.

When I was a kid I ordered a lot of stuff from Herters, from sleeping bags to fishing poles [I used to wrap my own rods]. If I remember correctly they got into trouble selling feathers for fly tying that came from protected birds. DOUBLE RIFLE SHOOTERS SOCIETY

It was the jungle cock bird from India but it didn't shut them down....it did however cost them their FFL license which hurt them badly. In those days one needed an FFL to sell ammo or bullets or powder or primers or, or, etc! They were finally sued by MEC for patient infringement....and they made several horrible business decisions trying to manufacture their own mini-bikes and boats and snowmobiles. Herters sold through the cataog quite well but failed miserably as a manufacturer and it was that along with many other bad decisions that killed them. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Howdy, Herters was a great outfit, I had ordered many hunting, fishing, & camping items from them. They had good stuff you couldn`t buy elsewhere, at a decent price... MISS THEM Those .222 bullets are for the 22 REM. JET cartridges.... they aren`t any good for the modern .224 caliber rifles !!

Back in the 1950's, a bunch of us guys would buy a case of beer, and sit around reading the Herter's catalog all evening laughing out tails off.... Yep, those wasp bullets were first class junk, contrary to what Herter's said about them. Don

Lads, Great responses and history lesson!!! So now that we've established the .222 bullets are for the Remmy Jet - does anyone reload for it, and would you like to buy some bullets , or should I buy another rifle??? Hey DMB - does Jay's have any Jets on the wall?? I live up here near Nahma and get down to "troll" country on occassion. Thanks again, eh!! Mike Si vis pacem... parabellum

I'll take those .222 bullets off your hands, how much you asking for them?

Herters was a great outfit, killed off by the Gun Control Act of 1968. I remember we made a couple of trips to NAS Twin Cities just to drive over to Waseca to buy goodies. I'll take most any Herter bullets off your hands. Yes, some of them had light jackets, but most seem to have been made by Norma. The 6mm wasp waist bullets were very accurate in my .243, and my .222 Remington shot the 50 grain slugs very well. Also, if you have a Herter Bull Cookbook, that is now a collectors item on Ebay. Just scanned this real quick and had to step away. While I was away, I kept trying to figure out how it was possible to make an illegal bird "feeder"! Upon further review - with my eyes now OPEN - the question has been resolved.

Hot Core, It's not the feeder, its what's IN the feeder!!! What do you think makes birds fly??? If you were eating those seeds, you'd be flying TOO!!!! Mike Si vis pacem... parabellum

Herter's, (Geo. Herter) anyway, was the biggest source of wind (and manure)... "model perfect" everything and then next year, "model perfect improved..." Decent products. Huge entertainment. Lousy service... He should be brought back to power windmills... The service was sucky. Many times I ordered and got the wrong product or ??? worse... One time I bought an $0.89 cent package of twist drills. The drills were sharpened IN REVERSE. My drill would not cut with the bevel reversed so I returned them. They sent me a check for the "gunsmith's" drills. (Almost $7.00.) Dumb and honest, I returned it for the right refund. I got the $0.89 check and a thank you, but probably cost them $20.-. If you got the product you ordered, as a rule it was more than useful and cheep, cheep, cheep. IMHO the demise came from a US post office rule, the sellor had to deliver within 30 days or give notice that the order could be cancelled or give a time frame, and again in 30 days... Bookwork, no doubt, killed them. De Haas thought the J9 Mausers were Mark X 2nds. Still have mine. ($50.00 for action?) I had a gunsmith suggest to me I weigh a box of Herter bullets. He was right. Variation was huge. Some guess Herter sold 2nds there too. P'dogs cannot tell, if you hit. As said, .222 was probably for .22 Jet Mag. Although there were many .223's for hornet, some .222... I wouldn't expect to win a match with them. At the same time, visit ebay and put in Herters. Collectors (nuts) are still there. Doubt you could sell the bullets on ebay, but make more that way. Your choice. Luck.
