I have always wanted an AR 15 so when I got down to thinking about a new Varmint rifle it naturally came together.

My concern is that I get what I need without going over board. As I understand it these are very interchangeable, ie. you can put different uppers on the same reciever and take a varmint gun to a short carbine.

All that being said who has tried, used, owns any of the popular name plates and what were your thoughts? I'll mainly use this rigle out to 300-400 yards. DPMS has some of these chambered in .243Win and .260Rem., would this be substantially better than the .223? If possible I'd like to be able to hit some speed goats (antelope) with it too.

Looking forward to reponses and please stay civil. Thanks.

The ones you speak of in 243 and 260 are AR10's not AR15. The two are not interchangeable. Depends on what you are going to shoot at that distance. At good flattop match barrel upper in 223 would handle that distance for say praire dogs, groundhogs, etc.

If you want to have your cake and eat it too get a 6.5 Grendel. Look it up on the internet and read about it. It's an impressive round.

I have a heavy 20" bull barrel upper with a Wilson match barrel. I shoot it alot off the portable benchrest for ground squirrels and prairie dogs.

My next build will be a 24-28" long range version in 6.5 or 6.8, I think.

Thanks Max, going to read on the Grendel. I like the name too.

Nice rifle Fjold, do you think a starter in the 223 would be good?

How does one go about putting an AR together? Is there a book for a guide? Any cost savings or just fun and satisfaction?

Go with the 223 It is cheap to shoot and with a good match barrel you can snuff prarie dogs past 500 yards. Use a lighter (weight) gun for goats. Remember, just because the barrel is heavy, that doesn't make it accurate. My most accurate ar has a skinny barrel under the handguards. 1/9 twist for 52-69 grainers, 1/7 for up to 80 grainers.

Go with the 6.5 Grendel over the 6.8, it literally beats the pants off it and in long range it beats the 308 at 800 and 1000 yards.

I just put this one together on the cheap side.

Midwayusa.com had the DPMS upper on sale for $385 last week. 16"-1:9 twist stainless bull barrel, rail on gas block, with bolt carrier and charging handle. For long range I had been thinking about a 20-24" barrel but just couldn't pass the price up. The lower is a DPMS also, although I have changed the trigger out for a JP. You can pick these up at the Houston gun shows for $229, or a RRA for the same price.$615 plus shipping for the upper and tax for the lower and you are in business.

Nice rifle. I would say that you put it together for a cheap price, but would not rate DPMS parts as "cheap". In the AR circle DPMS is more near the top then the bottom for quality.

The 223 is always a good starting point. I've actually changed plans and will building a left handed carbine AR next, with a STAG 2HL upper.

Several forums require a non "hotmail type" address. I was told it was to try and reduce spam. You can change your email to "hotmail" on AR15 after you sign up.

As usual just my $.02
