Ok what power scope for a 264Wmag? I have a nice 3x9x40. Or would a little more magnification come in handy. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

Depends. On your eyes and game and distance. Your 3-9 is a great and proven power range. But beings a 264 is generally more of an open country rifle , I think more mag is fine. The 4.5 - 14 VX3s are nice equipment. The VX6s to me are the best all the way around - in optics and in strength and durability. Great thing is that with the VX6's , you give up nothing. But they do cost more up front. I have several VX6 2-12s and a VX6 3-18. I worried a bit that the 3-18 might be too much but after one range trip I found it was excellent. On a rifle with a longer barrel like mine with a 26 inch barrel, its 44mm objective wasn't out of place either. It is a keeper.

For years I've had a 2x7 and a 1.5x5 on my 7mag and 300WM and never felt handicapped. Aim for the exit hole

depends on the ranges you intend to shoot.....for my style of hunting a 3-9 X 40 is quite adequate. I have a 4-12 X 40 on a .300 H&H but it's still more than truly needed. FWIW, most of my scopes are 3-9 X 40 and normally get set on 6X and are never changed..... /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." If one is going to be taking shots out past 500 I would go with a 4x12 4x14 if under a good 3x9 works well. I would also have a mutable aiming point reticule of some type.

and this is my point.....the .264 don't really carry a lot of energy past 500 yards.....so the need for a lot of scope power isn't at all required. /////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////////// "Socialism is a philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy, its inherent virtue is the equal sharing of misery." Back in caveman days when variable power scopes were not common and somewhat pricey, fixed power was the rule. The old Weaver K4 or K6 was the debate. Open country hunters for the most part went 6 power and woods hunters went 4x. 2x-7x or 3x-9x either one covers that with some extra. Worked then and I doubt that animals, even with internet access, have become educated to the point it wouldn't work now. Reason being is they spend their time on the internet learning that a .223 wont kill them.

Well after sleeping and having I've decided to stick with the 3x9. I simply have no desire to stretch my barrel any longer. So 500yd heck 400yd shots are pretty much a thing of the past. So for a pronghorn or 2. A hog down a clear cut a 3x9 will be plenty. When I stop and think about it while I do use a 3x9 on most of my rifles I bet most of the shots were with it set in the 4-6 range. I'll leave the 12 & 14 power for the varmint rifle. Thanks guys for taking the time to comment. As usual just my $.02 Paul K

I mounted a 2.5-10x 45mm Leupold LPS on my M70 Extreme Weather 264 WinMag and I really like it. The rifle balances very well and magnification range seems about right for me. If I were buying a new scope, I think I go with the Leupold 2-12x VX-6. I can definitely understand staying with the 3-9x scope though. I agree with you about magnification settings, considering that my LPS spends most of its life at 4-6x.

I've been using a S&B 3-12X50 non-A/O on mine since it was new. It's about perfect in my mind, but other's may want more or less. -------------------------------------------- Well, other than that Mrs. Lincoln, how was the play?
