Is the 6.5-284 Norma too long for a Remington 700 short action? Also, what is the difference between the Norma and Winchester versions of this cartridge? Thanks.

it'll work but youll just have to have it short throated. the bullets will take up a bit of powder space. the 284 is really a medium action sized case. but it has been done on a short action more than once.

Well the stupid answer is 'NOT much'... you can put it in a short action, but you won't gain much over what a 260 Rem will give you in a short action... unless you single shot it, and make sure you have a long throat for the 140 grain match bullets... you'd like a long action better.. less hassles, more convenience...

There is no "Winchester" version of this cartridge. The wildat 6.5x284 has been around for virtually as long as the .284 Winchester parent case. It, like the "factory" 6.5x284 Norma, is simply the .284 Winchester necked down for a .264" bullet with no other changes. A 6.5x284 would be terribly crowded in a Remington 700 "short" action. Some of the "medium" length actions that accomodate the WSM series (Winchester 70, Kimber 8400) have magazines of just over 3", which would work okay with this round, but typically you'll need a ".30-06-length" magazine to utilize it as it was designed with long, target-style bullets. If you intend to use it only as a single-shot bench gun, the action/magazine length is unimportant.
