Has anyone tried the 105gr A-max out of a 243 yet? I was looking at one of the savages the other day and it has a 1/9.25 twist, is that fast enough for the heavies? What kind of loads/speed are you getting? Thanks.

I used to shoot 105 a maxes out of my remy 700 pss with a 9" twist, they shot ok with reloader 19 behind them, certainly sub inch but i never had chance to really develop the load because i sold the rifle. Those long bullets will easily touch the lands though and with a ballistic coef. of .5 they should hang well at longer range. Try em out. Im a sucker for the moly version too but make sure your barrel is really clean of copper before you start with them and dont expect magic until you have put 10-20 shots through the barrel, and dont go shooting copper on top of it between times!

I have been using the 105 A-max with great success in a 700 REM. which I have done a little bit of tweaking to. It is twisted for 1-9 1/8. Hornady recommends at least a 1-9 twist for this bullet, though, it stabilizes fine in my rifle. My load consists of Lapua brass, Fed. 210m primer, 42.5 grs. of RL-22. This load produces an avg. of 2635 fps from the 22" bbl. and shoots sub 1/2" 5-shot grps @ 100yds. This load from my rifle shot a 7/8" 5 shot grp. at 200yds and a 3.5" 10 shot grp. at 400yds. It's not fast, but it's accurate and that is what's important. I tried 43 grs and it blew the grp. open to an inch. Amazing what a 1/2 gr. will do.

Wow, My 6br 8 twist shoots 28.5grains of Varget for 2816 fps in a 26" Under .5moa as well. Killed a deer at 200 yds-spine shot, bullet totally dusted on spine. Another deer double lunged, exited destroying both lungs and it only went 20-30 yds and had a hard time at that as I watched it. IN a 243 it could go faster, but the 'accuracy window' is perhaps under 3k. Again, my BR is an 8 twist, I'll have to try them in my Ruger RSI #1. The 20 " may be 10 or 9 something twist.

Match bullets seem to like 2800 to 2900 fps according to Sierra's tech line.. same with the 105 A Max according to Hornady... For the 243 and the 105 and 107 grain bullets.... I have had the best consistency and luck with H 414/ W 760... Cheers seafire

Thanks for the input guys, I think I'm going to save up for a 6mm on a long action with a 28inch fast twist barrel. That should give me what I want.

Won't seem to shoot accurately in my .243 Ackley at over about 2920 FPS which is disappointing . Can't reach the next accurate velocity node without too much pressure . Might work better in a 6mm/06 or similar ? The hunting imperative was part of every man's soul; some denied or suppressed it, others diverted it into less blatantly violent avenues of expression, wielding clubs on the golf course or racquets on the court, substituting a little white ball for the prey of flesh and blood. I have a 6mm Remington chambered on a Mauser 98 Civilian action ( early 1930s, production) with a 31 inch Bull Barrel ( 1.25 inches at the muzzle)... It has a one in 8 twist... it was chambered long to be able to use Berger 115 grain bullets seated way out there.... I am now waiting to have a Laminate Stock completed for it thru Richards Microfit down in California....which should be here in about early April.... I made this up, after all the fun I have had with a Remington 700 ADL chambered in the same set up, but with a 24 inch magnum heavy sporter contoured barrel.... I must warn you.... when your rifle is done, it sure will be a lot of fun.... If you are looking for the most accurate loads.... gleaned from a tonnnnn of testing..... 75 grain Hornady HP, 47.5 grains of H 414... MV about 3650 to 3725 out of a 24 inch barrel... when the bullet is seated to magazine length in the Remington Long Action.... 105, A MAX or Berger, 107 Sierra HP Match, 95 grain Ballistic tip, or my favorite...115 grain Berger Match....46.5 grains of Reloader 19...3250 fps out of a 24 inch barrel Remington... bullet seated to magazine length... Larger Rifle CCI primers used... Winchester brass prefered... Work up your loads, just to be safe... etc etc etc.... 85 grain Sierra HPs, Speer 90 grain SP, and Speer 105 grain SP get real honorable mention as very very accurate bullets.. H 414 is the powder of choice, except with the Speer 105 SP, which Re 19 works awfully darn good! good luck... you'll love it! The Mauser is my third 6mm Remington... the other was for a nephew when he graduated High School on an Enfield Action....with a heavy magnum contour barrel in 28 inches length.... cheers seafire
