My son has a 257 Roberts on a MKX he really likes. He came in yesterday and was looking at my Dakota Model 10 and was saying he would really like a single shot. Well he won't get the Model 10 for several years I hope. He has a birthday coming up and I was thinking of looking for a Ruger #1A I know they still make it in a 7x57. But in my swiss cheese memory I thought they made it in 257 Roberts in the past.

Anyone know? I would like to look for a used Roberts if possible. But, it they never made one I'll opt for the 7x57.

As usual just my $.02

I really prefer the #1A's for game hunting over the heavier versions. Not sure if you handload but the 7-57 is good for game but kind of big to double for a primary varminter.

I have had a 1A since they came out. Nice gun.

Mine was chambered in 7mm RM and I loaded it down. Nobody, except me, has heard of a 22" #1 in that cartridge but they made it! I use the rifle for woods hunting and wore out the barrel and Ruger rebarreled it for me.

Good luck

Ruger chambered the #1B(?) in 257 Roberts for a number of years. I have had 2, but both of them had very deep throats and only shot well with 115, 117, and 120 grain bullets. Within the past year Ruger made a limited edition stainless #1 that looked pretty neat. I have been thinking about build a stainless/laminated #1 in 256 Newton, but I have other rifles to build before I build another single shot. If you're going to spend $$ on a lifetime rifle for your son, a 257 NULA 20 would be a pretty nice present! If Mel gives you a deal, maybe a nice matched set of NULAs in 22LR, 257, and 7x57.

BTW, I think that I have a #1 take-off barrel in 257 somewhere around here.

I pretty much load for everything. His mom's rifle is a custom 7X57. For normal use he can choose a 243 I had cut down for his mom or he can try and steal hers or use his 257 Roberts. He is getting almost too tall and will need a new stock or I thought a #1 unshortened. By the time he is ready for something a 257 Roberts won't handle he will be big enough to use one of mine. Then all new decisions. To me the 1B was always to heavy I like the feel of the 1A better.

Sorry never heard of a NULA.

There is the International version as well with a full stock and 20" bbl and a 1S in 45-70 and 9.3 with 22" bbls

Here is a link to the Ruger #1's Ruger

My 1A is now a 30-06 which is what I wanted in the first place. Long story.

NULA is the New Ultra Light Arms Co. making lightweight rifles for the most part. They cost $3000 ea, take months to get and I would much rather have a Kimber Montana and the change. So I do.

Skip that and keep thinking of falling block rifles.

Had already been there. I know they don't chamber for the Roberts in the #1A now but thought they had in the past.

Ruger made a run of 500 1a's in stainless with really nice walnut stocks earlier this year. See them on gunsamerica & the auction sites ofr $800-900. The 1b is no longer made in 257 but the 2 I've seen were accurate.

I am looking for a 1A in 7x57. Instead of rebarreling my 1B in 243, I may sell it to buy the 7x57. Anyone interested in a IB in 243? :-)
