About two years ago or so, Jim Kobe turned my .223 Ruger #1 into a 22 Rem jet. The case capacity is about equal to that stated for the .218 Bee. Upon receipt from Jim I began to make rimmless case from .223 cases. This worked out great as the rifle handles and ejects both. The rimless cases Have a measured capacity of .86 cc where the rimmed cases measure right at 1cc. Depending on manufacturer the reformed .223 cases will vary somewhat. There is a good deal less head thickness in the pistol cases and the swelling from firing readily indicates this. The two different .223 cases (lc04 and RA commercial are also somewhat different but not much. Identical loading in either produces nearly the same velocity . At first this kinda surprised me than I realized that we are looking at power in power out. The rimless cases I'm sure see somewhat higher peek pressure but the burning doesn't last as long and and the exhaust pressures I would guess are nearly equal. The surprise came this week at the range when the rimmed cases with 15.1 grains of H110 pushed 34 grain HP Varmint Nite Mares to 3577 FPS. That's .221 Fireball performance. Next it pushed 52 grai berger hp fb bullets to 3000 fps with 14.5 gr. of H110. Now that's beyond performance of the fireball as puplished in the Lee Manual. There were no signs of high pressure!!~~~ Just thought I'd share this with you and let you know this rifle with its cartridge is just a fun thing. Hey! Thanks again Jim. roger Old age is a high price to pay for maturity!!! Some never pay and some pay and never reap the reward. Wisdom comes with age! Sometimes age comes alone.. | ||
