How many guys shoots the 22K Hornet?

I realy enjoy shooting mine.

I can reload with Somchem powder but I still get 2750 fps with 45gr soft point bullet.

Real good medicine for jackal...

FWIW there's one in the classifieds right now!

I have owned three 22 hornets. A ruger 77, a browning low wall and my latest, which is my favorite and a keeper, a Cooper model 38 classic in 22 hornet.

I reload for two Hornets--a CZ 527 and a Martini 12/15. My powder of choice is Lil'Gun with small pistol primers.

If you want to change a good shooting Hornet or K-Hornet from a merely superior performer to an absolutely outstanding one, I suggest trying AA 1680 with 40 gr. Sierras and any small rifle primer.

14.0 grains does the trick in the standard Hornet, and 15.0 grains in the K-Hornet. You'll probably have to use Winchester brass to get that much in, and you'll still be shooting compressed loads. But, you'll have no pressure signs and absolutely great accuracy...like dependably sub-half MOA 5-shot 100-yard groups. At least that's what has happened in my current ones. I couldn't believe the load either when I first heard of it, but trust me, it works!

Cheers!

Geedubya,

That looks like a sweet shooter.

Alberta Canuck,

You guys are lucky when it comes to the wide range of reloading powder that you guys can use.

I have used 35gr Vmax 40gr Speer and Sierras that all gave me good accuracy but I had a lot of runners when it came to hunting jackal.

When I started using 45gr PMP soft points they really pact a punch. I wish I could find the 46gr bullets that Winchester uses in their ammo as they also works real nice.

I use 55 gr Hornady SP's on top of 13.4 grs of Lil'Gun. I do not know what velocity I am getting but I do know the trajectory and I do know it is deadly on feral goats and they are bigger than a jackal. (Trajectory indicates 2680 fps). But, .... beware .... the standard hornet seems to digest more Lil'gun than the K-hornet. (I do not resize nor crimp - I use paper cups instead - and this seems to lower pressure quite a bit).

Jakkals, you may not be able to get Lil'Gun but your large magnum pistol powders is very similar to our AR2205 (H4227) and I was getting about 2750 fps with 45 gr Speer's (According to the trajectory at 100m and 200m).
(Somchem powders are pretty good in my opinion. I was getting an extreme spread of 2 m/s with MR200 from my 303).

Dont get me wrong about Somchem I am very happy with their powders but it would have been nice to get Lil' Gun for example as well.

I tried shooting 50gr speer bullets in my Hornet but the bullets are just to long and I start to get compacted loads.

I am very happy with the 45gr and I am sure they will also work well on your ferral goats.

Sorry, I didn't know where you are located (and still don't). Is it the RSA?

I doubt you would have as many "runners" if you could get AA-1680. 15.0 grains of it in my .22 K-Hornet gives over 3,100 fps to the 40 gr. Sierra, and they open up well at that speed.

Does not SomChem import/merchandise any of the faster of the eastern European ball powders for the .220 Russian which would be of similar burn rate?

Yes sir,

I am in South Africa.

As far as I know Somchem does not import any powder to South Africa.

Would have loved to test the Lil Gun in my rifle. But I am still happy with the 45gr SP at 2750fps combinantion.
