I just added the Model 700 17 Remington Fireball CDL Stainless Fluted (the one on the right) to the gunsafe. The one on the left is a Model 700 221 Fireball mfg'ed by Remington in a special run about 4 years ago. A Leupold VX-III 3.5x10x40 sits on top of it.

Question: what Leupold scope would you mount on the new 17 Fireball?

What a Beautiful rifle!!!!

It may be overkill, but if I was rounding out the package... I'd probably go with a Leupold 4.5 x 14 x 40mm.. in a matte Finish, with one of the fancier reticles... there varmint reticle or a mil dot...

I don't get excited about much in new rifles any more.. but that round and that rifle you have pictured are just gorgeous and I bet a fun little package...

I have a couple of 17 HMRs to dump... and I will have a spot for the 17 Fireball in a CDL...

Congrats....

cheers

I mounted a Leupold 6-18 X w/AO on my Rem 700 Limited CDL SF 17 Fireball. I have adjusted the trigger pull down from five pounds to three pounds. I need to open up the barrel channel a bit at the fore end. -- A Burris 4-16 X w/AO is on my Rem 700 LS rifle . To get the LS 221 Fireball to shoot smaller groups I have glass bedded the action, free floated the barrel, adjusted the trigger pull down from 6 1/2 pounds to 3 pounds and had a gunsmith lapp the bolt locking lugs. I have not started to reload the 17 Fireball round and have only shot a few Rem 20 Gr rounds from the 17 FB and got a 0.914 wide by 0.390 inch vertical 100 Yd group. ---The best load ( .46 inches 5 shoots at 100 Yds ) I have found for my 221 Fireball is using 18.6 Gr of RE 7 powder with the Hornady 40 Gr V-Max bullet in Rem brass with a Fed 205 Primer. --- Remington made only a few 700 LS 221 Fireball rifles during the 2003 or 04 year, so we have a low production run rifles.

It sounds like your 221 Fireball is the identical Model 700 that I have. I regularly get my 221 Fireball to shoot .5 or better groups using RE7; don't recall the exact load and I am traveling so I don't have my reloading records, but I do load the 40gr Noslers.

I also have only the Remington factory loaded 20 grain ammo for the 17 Fireball. I understand that Remington doesn't plan to produce bulk brass for the 17 Fireball until 2008 sometime. My 17 Fireball CDL SF is also called a "Limited Edition". It's got the engraving on the floorplate. Do you know what this is about?

I've got a Model 700 Classic in 17 Remington, not 17 Fireball, that I've mounted the Leupold 4.5x14x40 VX-III scope on. So I kind of thought that I would use the same or slightly less power scope on the 17 Fireball.

Nice looking rifles. Great rounds, both of em (.221 and .17 Fire Balls). Here's my .17 Fire Ball in a VSF with a 6X20 Weaver grand Slam mounted on et. Sure not as purty as yours but a most efficient tool.

At my age on ground squirrels I like lots of glass. The Weaver Grand Slam might not be the best for your rifle but I do like it a lot on mine, (I have a bunch of em, good value IMO). I'd go with a variable with an adjustable objective and the most power possible in the best scope I could afford that looked good on that purty rifle.
Let us know how it shoots for ya. Mines doing .4's and .5's with H4198 and the 25 V-Max at just under 3,800fps. Rat smack'n son-of-a-gun! Bet ya love it.
If your into wildcats the same case necked to .20 caliber with the shoulders set at 30 degrees is also a dandy, 32 grain V-Max's at 3,800ish fps and sort of rounds out the .221 family. It's called a .20 VarTarg and it too is a gas. Fantastic case to work with!

I really like the Leupold 3X9 EFR rimfire model with the AO.

Is that a catalog current production M700? It looks awful nice. Sounds like you like the Weaver scope. I'm looking for something that is fairly streamlined.

I intend to load the Hornady 20gr VMax bullets.

X2: Right size, adequate for 200+ yard shots on ".17-sized" targets, handy to carry. What's the point of a mini rifle with a maxi scope?

It is. It's a VSF which is is more of a heavy varmint rifle; 26 inch fluted barrel that's .820 at the muzzle, HS Precision Stock with aluminum bedding block. Not much of a walking rifle but out here we hunt p-dogs and gophers driving around on the pastures shooting off a rest in the back of a pickup so I don't carry it much. The .17 Fire Ball is a near ballistic twin to the wildcat .17 MachIV which I've shot for years and for me a high powersscope is a must for things like spotting a gopher head at 300 yards in the alfalfa. Fantastic Varmint round, you'll love it.
I have a number of Leupolds as well and they are great but with a 6X20 Leupold at $699.00 and a recent sale at Natchez with the 6X20 Weaver Grand Slam for $299.00 even I can do the math on that one. Very user friendly and extremely repeatable, not quite the glass as the Leupold but at two for one it works for me.

I would go with the LeupoldVXII 6-18 on that rifle. The 4.5-14 at least, you will find yourself wanting more magnification with that round at some point down the road if you go any less. Great round and capable of some serious shooting, but you will need the glass to do it. I have the same gun on my wish list and want the 6-18 on it. Very pretty pair.

Finally decided on the Leupold VX-II 4x12x40 AO. The max 12x power is plenty for the round's realistic ballistics. I hope the scope isn't too large for the rifle. [I've ordered the scope mail-order.]
