But its not the 260 i was thinking of.
I took my little sako browning .243 out to my smiths, with plans to make it a custom .260.
While discussing the project, he offerd me 50.00 more than I paid for the rifle for the action, in trade for anything in the shop.
I looked at 3 Whelens, and almost bit on one , then I looked a beautifull custom mauser that was hangig in the rack and Found it was a 6.5X57. Not the european version but a quite similar wildcat based on a necked up .257 roberts. Dies and brass included. And ! a cool old baush and laumb scope. Its a 1X5 with a strait tube and a rubber Eye piece.
So I gave Kurt my browning and a chunk of cash and I will go back with another chunk of cash in a couple weeks and pick it up !
I am pumped !

Roll EyesIf you've got a long enough magazine and a deep enough throat I don't think you could do any better in a 6.5. Just a slight edge over the Swede and adequate for everything up to and including Elk. I would have said Moose but I never killed one. BOOM mgunroger

Thanks guys for all the positive replies.
I think i will be able to pick it up in 2 weeks. I could go get it next weekend but I have strict rules about credit cards and rifles.
I plan to go see my smith next weekend , and picking up the dies and swapping the scope out , I really think the scope on it is cool, and I am gonna put it on another obselete rifle , my single shot ruger 7X57. I have a 2.5X8 VX-III to put on my 6.5.
I wiull try to take a picture of my rifle with my cell phone as I broke my camra and I have a new grankid on the way so I will need funds to spoil her...tj3006

i have a rifle that is a brno 98/22 action with a lothar walther 6.5x57 barrel in a richards microfit old classic stock. i use what i consider to be a mild load....44 grns imr4350 and a 140 grn remington bulk bullet at about 2550 fps. the season before last i killed the best whitetail deer of my life with this rifle and load. you'll enjoy your new rifle. good luck with it

6.5 x 57 is my favorite cartridge...
Mine is on a Model 70 action, with a heavy magnum contour barrel that is 28 inches long, and has a one in 8 twist...

It is heavy, but I love that rifle...and love that cartridge...

I was wondering when you'd chime in on the x57.

Hey, I remember shooting some 'overly hot loads-my bad using reformed unturned brass), and the speeds out of the original '96 mauser seemed very good, what was not to like!

A 28" should squeeze a lot of performance out of any 6.5, and not leave much difference vs a larger case.
