Just picked up my new Rem 700 CDL 264 win mag. Now I am looking for the best loads using RE22 and a 130gr bullet. I will be using Berger VLD's and Nosler accubonds. I don't own any mag primers. Do I need to get some? I appreciate all the info I can get.

Matt.

My second centerfire rifle was a Winchester pre 64 "Westerner" in 264.

I always used Magnum Primers.
This was a long time ago I used Surplus H4831.

Congrats on owning a super rifle. I haven't loaded the 130s with reloader 22 but have shot a bunch with IMR7828 and Ramshot magnum. Both powders give grat results with these bullets.

IMR7828 start with 58.5grs and work up to 61.0grs. Out of a 26" barrel you should see 3175fps.

Ramshot magnum start with 65.0grs and work up to 69.6grs. Should get you 3200fps. Both powders give me sub MOA groups. I have a custom Encore .264 and a 700 BDL in .264. I have used the Encore with a 120gr BT to kill numerous deer past 400 yards and even one at 620 yards. reflex264

I also bought the CDL in the 264 WM a while back. I tried just about everything to get it to shoot accurately and finally gave up on the barrel. I had a Krieger put on and it now shoots great. I'm sure you'll have better luck with your barrel as I'm sure mine was just a lemon.

In my new barrel, I find 61 grains of RL22 works well behind a 130 Scirocco. I don't think you absolutely need magnum primers, but I have always used them because most of the reloading manuals show them for the 264.

My rifle grouped well @ Re22 61gr with the 140VLD primed with 215GM.
Have not used the 130's yet.

A 264 that I took to Africa shot the 130TSX into .4 with a load of 65grains of RL-25 and a 215M primer.

H1000 also shot well but didn't match the velocity........as it is a single based powder.

You need SLOW powders in a 264 even with the lighter projectiles.

With a 140 try VN N570.........it will give you 3200fps. thumb

I did some powder testing with my .264 and posted a thread on the results some time ago. It may help you. Testing the .264 with 7 different powders

Many of the Gurus of the .264 helped me immensely and you may want to get input from them (Stonecreek, Blair, Ramrod340 etc)

RE-22 is a great powder for the .264 -- with 85 and 100 grain bullets. For the heavier weights you need a slower powder to reach the optimum (not "maximum") velocity. RE-25 is just a tad slower and would be better, but one of the super slow VV-N powders or US-869 is likely a better choice with a 130 grain bullet. With the right powder you should be able to achieve something north of 3200 fps with the 130 grain Nosler, depending on your barrel length and how "fast" or "slow" it is.

matt,

As Stonecreek said........start with RL-22.

4350 is way too fast.

IMR 4350 works pretty well with bullets under 100 grains. I didn't think it would either, until I tried some.

I guess I will have to look at a burn rate chart. I was under the impression that 4350 was a fairly slow powder. Of course I am thinking in terms of the whelen when I say that. Thanks for the heads up.

The load I have used for over 30 yrs is 73.5 gr H-870 and whatever bullet I figured I needed--usually a Sierra Gameking or the Hornady 129. Both give excellent accuracy and 3180 for the 140 and 3240 for the 129. All from a McGowen 23" #2 tube. Wonderful calibre and a real killing machine with minimal meat damage as long as the shot is well placed[ like it oughta be!]
