I've been wondering this so I decided to put it to you folks. Is my 24" short chambered 280 barrel (mauser 98) long enough to enjoy the presumed benefits of the Ackley improved 40 degree version? It would'nt be my first "wildcat" and I have access to either set of dies. Rifle is not built yet but I have most of the parts. A couple of others need to be finished yet but you know how it is when a brainstorm hits and the ideas come faster than the money!

Yes. For awhile I had a Brno ZG-47 chambered in 280 Improved, 24" barrel. It was capable of significantly higher velocity than the Remington version, great accuracy, with just a little additional powder, recoil, etc.
